Acting Prime Minister Named
The deputy of outgoing Somali premier Ali Mohamed Gedi, who resigned today, has become the country’s acting prime minister, the president told parliament today, AFP reports.
"Salim Aliyow Ibrow will be the acting the prime minister of Somalia until I appoint another one," Abdullahi Ahmed Yusuf said in Baidoa, the town where parliament sits.
Yusuf was speaking moments after receiving Gedi’s letter of resignation.
"I congratulate Mr Gedi for his decision," Yusuf said, adding that he would hold consultations with members of parliament and Somali civil society before choosing a new premier.
Gedi is a member of the Hawiye clan - the largest in the country - while Ibrow is not. For his part, Yusuf is a member of the Darod clan, the country’s second largest.
"My only intention is to safeguard the transitional institutions in order to bring stability to Somalia. After consultations with my people and the international community, I proudly decided to resign," Gedi told parliament.
"I will assist any appointed prime minister and support him in the battle against insecurity. I urge all MPs to work together as one body and I thank you for support during my tenure," he added.
"As a member of parliament, I will closely work with the government in the fight against terrorism and those elements fighting the people of Somalia from Asmara," Gedi said, referring to Islamist leaders based in the Eritrean capital.
The 55-year-old Gedi, who took charge of the transitional government in late 2004, had faced growing pressure from Yusuf and others over his performance in stemming violence and rebuilding the country’s institutions.
Ibrow, in his 50s, hails from the Digil-Mirifle clan in southern Somalia.
Like Gedi, he studied in Italy and he is a trained vet, who lectured with the outgoing premier at Mogadishu University before the government of dictator Mohamed Siad Barre was toppled in 1991.

I don't think anybody actually believes in this "DAWLAD."
Everyone just wants their piece of the pie and the money thats coming in. Ethiopia and the U.S call the shots and everyone else just follows.
The most die hard TFG folks on this board will be saying f*** the TFG if Abdullahi Yusuf dies today.
