What Skill Or Trade Do You Wish To Master?
I was always fascinated by pottery, carpentry & glass making. Back in Somalia, carpentry was not a highly respected profession, most carpenters were Jareer folk who made lousy income. Black smiths in Somalia were called "Tumaal" and were looked down on, no clan would even let their daughters marry a black smith. In the U.S. skills like carpentry, mechanics, plumbing and black smithing are all well-respected and high paying jobs.
In college I took an 'Intro To Pottery' course and just fell in love with this skill. The idea of making something from scratch is very appealing. If the turning wheel & baking oven weren't so darn expensive, I'd probably set up a small pottery workshop in my basement.
What about everyone else?

Wa Alekum Salaam Naaima,
I like your idea! I heard in Scandanavia, there are many trade schools & technical schools, do Somalis take advantage of those schools by learning skills like electricity & mechanics?
X-Unit,
Being a chef is a well respected profession in this country, you can easily make a comfortable income!

Koronto,
I have always loved growing vegetables in my garden as a kid. I hope to become a farmer someday.

AW,
Organic farming is all the rage these days, maybe you should think about tapping in to that? I actually have an older brother who has been entertaining the idea of opening an organic Halal chicken farm in Gainsville, GA for years. Land is dirt cheap there and its only 1 hour from Atlanta. Maybe you guys should talk?
GB,
You are already in computers, right?

UGA has an excellent agriculture program, I wish more of our kids would take advantage of learning these skills rather than all pursuing a Bachelor's degree.
Two years of mechanic school and start pay is around $44/hour. I see some older Somali dudes getting their HVAC & Plumbing certifications, getting a beat-up van and having their own business that way. They make good money from what I hear too.

Re: What Skill Or Trade Do You Wish To Master?
Very Good thread!
As a youngster I used to converse a lot with my grandfather who was a well-respected elder and very skilled in creating harmonies between disputing parties whether within the family or the society in general. He was known to be one of the smartest people in my family. I always wanted to be like him and be a judge and mediate people. One of the things my grandfather was against was to call the Jareer people “Jareer”. He would tell us to call them Reer Shabeele because most the Jareer people are from Shabeele like the Shabeelooyinka and remember that includes Qalaafe, Godey and Mustaxiil areas of Somali Galbeed.
To keep it short, I always wanted to be a Qaadi or Judge!
