The US is secretly upgrading special stealth bomber hangars on the British island protectorate of Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean in preparation for strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities, according to military sources.

The improvement of the B1 Spirit jet infrastructure coincides with an "urgent operational need" request for £44m to fit racks to the long-range aircraft.

That would allow them to carry experimental 15-ton Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) bombs designed to smash underground bunkers buried as much as 200ft beneath the surface through reinforced concrete.

The Pentagon has drawn up contingency plans for a range of attacks on Iran. The likeliest is a five-day bombardment, aiming to disable nuclear facilities and all major airbases and radar facilities; the most devastating would involve air and cruise missile attacks on 1000 targets, including headquarters and barracks of the Iranian Republican Guard Corps, over more than a month.

I watched CNN news earlier and heard White House spokeswoman Dana Perino saying "This is a country that is enriching and reprocessing uranium for weapons grade", and "This is a country that is seeking nuclear weapons...this is a country that sponsors terrorism...this is a country that hates us for our freedoms...etc."

I was sitting there going darn I've seen this movie before.

I believe the Iraq invasion was planned even way before the Bush administration which explains why the sanctions were indefinite.


Yeah, I don't think they're thinking this one through......See this is how it always goes:

1. Sanctions which try destabilize the regime, cripple the economy/infrastructure, boost local opposition, and weaken the country overall.
2. If that doesn't break them (like Libya), then they will try to instigate mini conflicts around them.
3. Then you up the rhetoric against them.
4. They are pretending to negotiate while they are building up for war.

No, I just went through a lil phase where I got interested in the Russian contribution to WW2 and Russia's crash industrialization and rise to super-power post-war. I don't particularly like him, but he was probably the coldest personality I've come across in history.

I previously wasn't aware of the massive contribution the Russians made to the Eastern front and I think the war may have been won by the Germans if the Russians didn't fight in the East.

Some of the things I found fascinating about him:

- It was said that when his son tried to kill himself and failed, he said: "He can't even shoot straight!"

- He let another son die in a German concentration camp b/c he wouldn't exchange him for a German general. His son was a Lt. and he said: "A general is always worth more than a Lt"

- One letter they found about a report of how many people had sent to the Gulags or killed. He put a note in the letter saying: "6,000 more, I don't care who!"

- He said: "1 dead man is a tragedy, 1 million dead is a statistic"


I don't think the costs were worth it ethically, but there's no denying he did transform Russia.

Goebbels in 1939-40 was talking about how victory was certain b/c there would be no Eastern front. It just didn't make any sense.

hitler just made a mistake.
people make mistakes you know, and we are thankfull for his series of mistakes.

All hitler had to do was insure that he fight only one front,
keep the non-aggression pact with Stalin going untill he knowcked britian out.
if he could not conquer britian then he should have attacked the middle east .
intead of the africa corps, imagine Rommel with a division, why not 2 .
all north africa, and egypt and iraq and syria would have fallen easily.

there was a possiblity that stalin was planning his own trecherous surprise attack a few months after Barbarrosa, but the germans would have done even better in a defensive war in Poland and Romania than they did in the first couple of months of barbarossa, and besides their counter attack would have coincided with spring , meaning no obstacles to Moscow.

Possesion of Middle eastern colonies of britian and france opens up the possibilty of a southern front and capture of the baku oilfields from the south.

Dominance of the baltic through the U-boats, possesion of the allied oilfields and the baku fields, would have stopped the lend lease supplies from getting to the Soviet union, and this would mean that they would have found it difficult to keep the industrilization and the war machine from going as it did.


If hitler didnt attack the Soviets, but went after british middle eastern colonies and france's , he would have easily absorbed the expected soviet future attack and eventually win.

Yeah, as they say: "Hindsight is 20/20"......I guess it didn't look like a mistake in 1941.

I don't think Stalin would have done a surprise attack b/c Germany looked pretty vicious back then. Even if he wanted to, he could have sustained massive losses that may not have been worth the risk especially.

I think what fueled the Russian will to fight was the massive destruction and devastation the Germans unleashed upon them. Even when the Russians made it all the way to Berlin, the massive shelling they laid upon Berlin, they would write notes on the shells like: "For Stalingrad" etc.

BTW, did you see the 1945 Great Patriotic War parade in Moscow. It's in color, man it's crazy!!!

I've never seen it in color, it makes it look real not history-like. They even have the banners of the Nazi armies they throw at the feet of the soldiers.

Am reading a book by a French writer, Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt, which is based on a "what if" scenario. What would have happened to the man (and therefore to world history) if Hitler had been accepted instead of rejected at the Vienna School of Art in 1908. Though its a great read, I just can't seem to finish it.

He spelled out EXACTLY why he attacked. He wanted to expand the size of Germany, he considered the Slavs to be an inferior race, worthy of slavery, and he intended to vastly expand the size of the German population and living space at the expense of the Poles, Czechs and Russians. It wasn't a secret. He was perfectly clear. During a meeting with his General Officers, as he was laying out the strategy, he showed his contempt for the Soviets with the quote "All we have to do is kick in the door, and the whole rotting structure will come tumbling down." He was convinced the Wehrmacht would bring Russia to its knees in three months. It was a miscalculation, but he wasn't far off.
