Relocating for a job
Is that really a good idea or should one stick with their current job until something comes up within the same area? Has anyone here done it before and what were some of the challenges you encountered as you transitioned to your new company and work area? Also how far away would relocate for a job? Would some of you in America move to China for job?

Re: Relocating for a job
I noticed for white people if they secure a job in another city or state, they would immediately put up the house for sale, pack up and move. Once they get to the new city, they'd immediately buy a new house, enroll the kids in school and continue life, they don't stop for nothing. They can easily transition, but if you have family & relatives in your current city, it isn't that easy to just move.
It depends on what ammenities the new job is offering you that you don't have at your current job. Are they offering you more benefits, better pay, job security, good retirement plan, good vacation time? If Yes, then I'd not think twice about moving. If you are single, that even makes the decision to relocate even easier. Just weigh the positives Vs. negatives and see where that leaves you.
Good luck!

Re: Relocating for a job
taking risks are good, especially when you only have yourself to worry about.
If there's a time to embrace risk, it's when you only have yourself to care for.

I was relocated and it's not easy to be away from family, my relocation is temporary though for getting some courses done and training perposes. I don't like the food, people and every thing in this Uncle Sam country is strange to me.

Re: Relocating for a job
Qansa,
Like Koronto said u need to analyze it carefully.
I have worked in different states and countries. Each place has something good and bad about it.
If you are purely an $$ and cents guy, make sure to relocate to a low cost area for a job that pays similar or better than what u are earning.
I assumed that u live in Boston and u were offered a job in a cheaper city like Columbus, Ohio with the same salary, the cost of living difference would be much different.
My buddy moved from Boston to Cleveland and was making the same salary but due to the lower cost of living, he only lives off 30% of his paycheck. The other 70% goes into the bank.

Re: Relocating for a job
Qansa,
My buddy used to pay 1,200 for a 1 bedroom with all utilities in Brookline. He now lives in a swanky 2 luxury apartment for $500.
That alone makes it worthwhile.
I was once lured to move to Mississippi by this recruiter for an automaker based there. I was tempted but couldn't bear living out in a state with movies made about it: MISSISSIPPI BURNING

Re: Relocating for a job
relocating for a job is not half as concerning as relocating because your husband works in another state/country. now that's a major move.

Lol@Mississippi. That state has a bad stereotype wallahi. When I think of Mississippi, the first thing that comes to my mind is rednecks and all kinds of dirty racist poor hicks. Rent is cheap in the Midwest but that is probably because the economy there is shit. T

Do it, one thing I have learnt careerwise is if you stay in your comfort zone then you won't climb up the ladder. You have to be willing to grab every opportunity that comes your way and not base decisions on where your family, friends and fellow somalis live or what you are used to. You can always visit or go back when you have made the $$$s

Re: Relocating for a job
Qansa:
This was straight out of college. It was Mississippi for $40,000 or staying in DC for $45,000.
$40,000 in Mississippi would have allowed me to live like a Warlord
There would be very little to do but I would be saving top dollar & living upperclass.
Zulaika,
Honey that ain't bad cause u have links. Imagine poor Abdi in the Deep South and worse of all running into those redneck US Troops who served in Somalia during Black Hawk Down like when I was in Georgia in 1998 & ran into a couple on a Greyhound bus. I pretended to be from Kenya because it was 6 of them versus me .
