Ethiopian army pays tribute to its soldiers that died in Somalia
MOGADISHU, Somalia Nov 23 (Garowe Online) - A well-organized event was held Friday in the capital of Somalia, Mogadishu, by Ethiopian army officers paying tribute to soldiers that died in military operations inside Somalia.
Officials from the Ethiopian ministry of defense, Ethiopian and Somali army officers and invited guests participated at the ceremony, held at the same hall where the National Reconciliation Conference was concluded in August.
A moment of silence was held for all the Ethiopian soldiers who died during the ongoing military intervention in neighboring Somalia.
Ethiopian generals handed out medals to soldiers serving in the country for bravery.
Gen. Gabre, who commanded the Ethiopian army's initial offensive against Islamic Courts forces last December, said they will remain in Somalia until "extremists are removed."
He indicated that Somalia and Ethiopia are brotherly countries with similar interests. The general also commended several Somali clan elders, whom he praised for working towards securing peace in the country.
There have been no official numbers of the Ethiopian troop presence in Somalia. But military sources suggest that the initial Ethiopian offensive in December 2006 used as many as 60,000 troops.
Currently, the number of Ethiopian troops present in various Somali regions is estimated to be somewhere near 35,000.
The bulk of these forces are positioned in and around Mogadishu, where they help the government fight against Islamist-led insurgents.
Meanwhile, at least two Ethiopian army trucks exploded today in Mogadishu's Wardhigley district today, wounding at least two soldiers, according to witnesses.
Several bystanders were arrested by the Ethiopians as suspects.
Such guerrilla attacks have raged in Somalia since the beginning of this year, when the Ethiopian army rolled into Mogadishu for the first time in history.
