They may be genetically programmed to hunt down hunks so their offspring get more opportunities to reproduce because of their attractiveness.
Meanwhile beautiful women are less concerned about their sweethearts’ looks because their kids have a head start. Instead they tend to be keener on wealth or social status.
The findings go against the long-held theory that attractive people — such as Hollywood stars like Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt — are only ever drawn together.
But they do explain why someone like TV’s Ugly Betty, played by actress America Ferrari, can date fit fellas.
Human behaviour experts from the Department of Anth-ropology at Poland’s University studied single women and carried out a major review of previous work on the subject. Their research has just been published in respected journal Evolution and Human Behaviour.
It concluded that plainer women sought out sexy partners who looked hunky and healthy.
The researchers said: “It can be hypothesized that women with higher waist-to-hip ratio, i.e. less attractive ones, may more intensively ‘hunt for genes’ related to attractiveness to increase their offspring’s chance to be more attractive and to have a greater chance of reproductive success.”
Previous studies on sexual attraction have shown men find women with a moderate waist-to-hip ratio most sexy.
Difference
Psychologists believe it is because it emphasises the difference between the sexes. An hour-glass figure contrasts with a boyish “straight up and down” shape.
On the other hand “apple-shaped” women — who have very large hips and almost no waist because of excess weight — are often deemed unattractive.
A slim woman can still have an “apple” bone structure which may make her seem “bottom heavy”.
