Daughter dies after strangulation

Friends feared worst

MISSISSAUGA -- Muhammad Parvez appears in court this morning charged with strangling his daughter as homicide detectives continue to look at her older brother to determine if he had a role in the slaying.

The 57-year-old man was charged yesterday with killing 16-year-old Aqsa Parvez, who friends say rebelled against her father's religious expectations.

Aqsa died in the Hospital for Sick Children late Monday and her mother arranged for her daughter's organs be donated.

OBSTRUCTION

Peel detectives charged her brother, Waqas, 26, with obstructing police, allegedly for trying to mislead officers during their investigation.

But police said Waqas continues to be investigated by homicide detectives to determine if he's involved in Peel's 16th murder of the year.

"We're now trying to determine what role or culpability he may have had in the homicide as well," Peel Police homicide Insp. Norm English said. "We're certainly going to be conducting further investigations to determine if he had a role in this."

He said the investigation is still early and whether Muhammad is charged with first- or second-degree murder depends on witness information and the results of a pending autopsy.

Investigators suspect the Grade 11 Applewood Heights Secondary School student was strangled.

Police were alerted to the incident when a man called police just before 8 a.m. Monday saying he had killed his daughter at their Longhorn Trail home, in the Eglinton Ave.-Hurontario St. area.

Most students learned during the school's morning announcement yesterday that Aqsa, who was born in Pakistan, had died.

A memorial with her photo and a book of condolences was in the front lobby of the Bloor St.-Tomken Rd. high school for classmates to jot down memories or poems.

"It just, like, really sad. Everyone was just crying," said Grade 10 Natalie Rance.

Students and friends said Aqsa began removing her headdress, the hijab, when she attended school this term after her older sister had graduated. With no one to watch over her, she apparently felt free to dress more casually.

Aqsa recently left the family home and moved in with a friend, said Krista Garbutt.

She said the victim was quite open with friends about discussing the culture clash she was having with her father, but it appears no one in authority was aware.

"I don't think so; she didn't tell a teacher," Dominiquia Holmes-Thompson said yesterday.

Students were sent home with letters for their parents informing them of Aqsa's death and an outline of symptoms for depression or stress that their kids may feel. It assured parents that counsellors are available.

Holmes-Thompson described Aqsa as a kind person who loved to take photos, loved to dance, "and all she wanted to do is to be herself."

She said Aqsa was at a friend's place after leaving her home around 8 p.m. Sunday.

"She was happy, she was ready to go to school, she was excited," Holmes-Thompson said, adding Aqsa intended on returning to the family home to get clothes.

SHE WAS "SCARED"

But Holmes-Thompson said Aqsa told her she was "scared to go home."

"Because she didn't obey the rules...," she said.

Holmes-Thompson said her friend would arrive at school wearing jogging pants and hijab and then change clothes, removing the traditional headscarf.

Friend Ashley Garbutt, 16, said that Aqsa didn't want to wear the hijab anymore.

that is not the point in who can benefit from it or not the point im trynna get across is that the moral value of the family and respect for the girl was very limited..their daughter was just murdered by HER FATHER infront of the other family members and all the family can do is donate the organs....poor lil girl...most definately i know a sane family would not even think about that if they were in their situation..most ppl would be shocked and shit and bury the body but no this family they jump up and donate organs after the girl died..shows how much they cared about the lil girl...them killing the girl had nun to do wit religion..ok the girl took off her hijab and what not if he thought he can bring justice and show her that is was wrong to do things against islam he could of showed her in a different aspect but he commited a bigger sin than she did a by murdering her instead he could of avoided that and punished her in a different way

amiin...but styll i believe it was wrong..if he believed this western society was currupting her he could of taken her back home and there she would of changed hopefully due to the islamic background...she is 16 years old i understand she hit puberty but still wat she does is between her and allah she did not deserve to die like that but than again her time came and allah wrote for her to die in her dads hands....as for him he ruined a whole family he broke it down that family will nvr be the same again...

Well, from my understanding organ donation is permitted in Islam as long as it is done within the the framework of Sharia.

I understand that but the situation the family was in how can they think about donating the girls organs dunt say its because of religion and they have deen if they did they should know murder itself is a huge sin u dunt correct a mistake with another mistake the...whatever the girl did he did not need to correct her by taking her life...what she did is between her and allah...there are so many ways he could of avoided this..whats his perogative now??? what did he gain from it except being booked

I didn't, which is why I phrased the topic title as a question.
