hey guys: first time on the forums: article read plz

Post by sweet_smile »

hey just wrote a funny article its a bit of light humour for a local magazine, now they want me to enter it in one of the somali magazines. So I would like to know your opininon and if you guys would read or buy the magazine if this was the front cover.

somali weddings: a place of celebration or just an opportunity to meet your future spouse...

what does a somali wedding mean to you? is it a joyous occasion for family and frieds to celebrate the comming together of two souls or is it just ''monsoon season'' an oportunity to get the latest dress you got on loan from your anutie when she came back from Dubai. Or equally just an opportunity to get dressed up, get noticed and hopefully meet the person of your dreams as somali weddings are seen as the most acceptable way for the generation of today to meet up as opposed to riwayaads and underground blacked out shisha cafes where its so dark you d,nt know wheather your getting chatted up by the somali version of mr T or whoopie goldberg.

originally somali weddings were a time of blessings. they were bestowed to the bride and bridegroom since the begining of time.Marriage in somali culture has always been a conerstone of society. It has signified not only the union of two young people but also of two families and most of the time two clans. Over the last ten years, due to instability and crises at home, many somalis fled and settled in foreign lands. As a result, marriage itself has also been affected as changing roles and expectations.

The purpose and the meaning of a somli wedding has changed over the years, over the last decade somali weddings have evolved from a traditional celebration of the union of love, where family and friends celebrate the union of their loved ones to a speed dating rally where on some occasions majority of the guests do not even now the bride nor groom to even show them respect and love. These days's people use somali weddings as a more appropriate way of meeting their future sposes.

A typical somali wedding consist of particular sub-groups which have formed and become apparent over the years and are present at every somali wedding without fail.

They are as follows:

single mothers: Mainly out to flaunt their new found independance and release from male dominance. Ofeten found flirting heavily with the majority of the male guest, specifcally members of the band and the cameramen.

Diric crew: This group see themselves as the elite members of the wedding which are the most tradtional and culturally aware. They feel they are the most deservings at the wedding and like to be in the centre of attention(I.e) they are often at the head of the stampede leading to the dance floor to begin their somali dance routine. They come fully equipped with dancers,a mike and most importantly a drum kit.

X-factor rejects: These are a group of random men and woman who are often univited and hang round the band waiting for an oportunity to sing. They see weddings as open mike nights and hope that after their big debut they'll become the next jubba or Zeynab Cige.

Golden oldies: Considering most of this group claim disability allowance surprisingly they are the most active guests at the wedding. Weddings are their only chnace to let themselves go and socalise with fellow golden oldies.

Moaners: in your life you are guranteed to come across this particular group as they are large in size and take up majority of the somali population. Moaners claim to hate somali weddings and everything about them, yet they're the first ones in and the more then often the last ones to leave.
they complain about the food, decor, music and venue and anything else tehy can think of, then surprisingly enough prepare for the next one the following saterday.

Dizze Rascals: Rebellious youth who refuse to conform to the norms and exepctations of a somali wedding. They dress inappropriately, refuse to dance and predominantly spend most of their tiem in the corridors either trying to catch a straying female on her way to the toliet or waiting restlessly to start a fight with the grooms brother for refusing them entry.

Fish N chips: Often take a back seat in teh weddings not really getting involved as they were forced by their parents to come as they are desperate for them to engage in somali culture like all 'their friends do'. They are easily spotted as they are the one that sit nervosuly with their family, looking uncomfotabl in the diric they ahve been told to wear for the first time.

Chewers: Are often armed with Khat in their back pockets, they are always located between the band and the single mothers. You will notice them as they are always negative, anti-social and forceful in their approch to women.

Tube riders/national express: This particular sub groups consists of a group of females between the ages of 18-27, they are the type of females who are strongly confident in approching guys. This particular gropu see themselves as independant, self serving girls who strongly believe in equal rights between males and females, this particular group are seen as the most rebelious and controverisla out the groups.

Pretty boys aka 'spice boys': this group think they are above all the male sub groups and are seen as dominant and confident by other male sub groups. These are are whats know as 'spice boys' but without the boy power. As they are often the guys who stand at the back of the hall waiting to be approched rather then do the approching. These are also the guys that have at one point dated the majority of the hall, this includes the bride/grooms relative/bridemaidsand emoplyees of the hotel/hall and in some cases other member of family. This particular group do not see themselves having a lavish wedding due to their guests being so many exes.

To conclude the typical somali wedding the one thing that all these sub groups share is teh intntion to have a good time and to hopefully meet their future spouses where tehy can sit up on teh stage and talk about the sub groups that have come to their weddings, carrying on the cycle of mosoon season. So according to all these sub groups these days unless somali weddings evole again, a somali wedding will always be a palce of enjoyment and a chance to get dressed up and meet people you have not seen for a while, there is one thing that will neve rchnage in a somali wedding and thats the amount of swapped phone numbers will always be and is teh measurement of how successful of boring a somali wedding was.

( sorry to bore you peeps would appriate your comments. thnks )
