Is The North as Awash With Arms as The South?

Post by Murax »

I don't think so. I think the proliferation of weapons was more rampant in the South than the North. Remember after the Cusman Caato/Indacadde drug trafficing, expired food, expired medicines, checkpoints and all the other 1 million illegal Hawiye commerce, arms trafficing was a big trade for some Bakaarah "Businessmen". These guys would funnel weapons to conflict zones from Congo to Liberia and the price of the commodity (weapons) would skyrocket once it got to those areas. Xamar was a defacto arms hub for conflict areas around Africa, so it would make sense that Southern Somalia would also be so awash with weapons being so close to Xamar weapons caches. I don't think the North had a similar situation. Thoughts?

Somaliland is not as awash with arms as the south, simply because it enjoys peace. The Somaliland military imports its weapons through their own Berbera port, the rest of the arms destined to private businessmen in Somaliland namely Burco receive their cargo from Bossasso, the main hub of the illegal arms trafficking route in the Horn of Africa. Mogadishu's Bakara Arms Market being the main market of East Africa and beyond.

Did you know that majority of the arms at the Bakara Arms Market were trafficked through the coast of Puntland, primary trafficking point being Marero, a small village close to Bossasso. Arms traffickers from Puntland would transport their stock at Gaalkacyo and sell it to the businessmen in Mogadishu, eventually landing at the vendors in Cirtoogte. The Puntland businessmen from Bossasso at their turn ordered their arms consignments from the Yemenis with whom they have a long business connection with.

Interesting. I'm assuming the reason Bari isn't awash in arms is because there is an authority there who know of these weapons transfers and don't let it get into random people's hands. However ofcourse there more then willing to sell it to Xamar where they would be more then happy to destabalize, especially getting profit too. Even though there importing weapons, Bari isn't like the wild wild west south where even geeljires have 'tekniko'. All this being said, Xamar has been importing weapons for ages.

A typical arms consignment consists of the following:

Yemenis used to own most of the dhows used for this business, but more and more Somalis own the dhows used for these shipments. In part because Yemenis dhave become wary of the risk involved with the increase of surveillance in the Somali seas, partially because the involved traffickers want to have more control over the arms trade.

After the ICU took over, arms shipments destined to Mogadishu have been going directly to the ICU, sometimes not even passing through Bakara Arms Market, which is unusual. The Arms consignments would be received at Ceel Macaan and Xarardheere ports. Unlike the warlords of the APRCT Alliance for Peace Restoration and Combat against Terror on Washington's payroll who were dependant on the Bakara Arms Market, which at its turn was dependant on the networking channels through Puntland.

sug waan soo socdaa, I'm struggling here. What's wrong with this place.

A typical arms consignment consists of the following: ZU-23-1 with a seat for gunner - 18 units, DShK - 60 units, AK47 aussault rifles - 500 units and 24 boxes of ammunition all shipped by dhow.

I don't know how the arms trafficking network works now with the TFG in Mogadishu in place. With the chaos ensued, the arms probably pour into Mogadishu from both channels of the country; Puntland and Mogadishu itself.

The arms traffickers in Puntland are of the same stock as the human traffickers and pirates. It's a large growing Bossasso based mafia in Somalia that is ironically turning into an organised crime syndicate, because of their support from the Puntland administration with whom they have close ties. Instead of being confronted by the Puntland administration, they are becoming bolder every single year to the detriment of the Puntland security and eventually its progress.
