Kismayo blast kills four including two aid workers

MOGADISHU (AFP) - Four people, including two foreign aid workers, were killed Monday in an explosion in the southern Somali town of Kismayo, medical and aid sources told AFP.

The sources said the two foreigners were believed to work for the Dutch branch of Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF - Doctors without Borders).

A local employee of MSF-Holland who asked to remain anonymous said the four were killed when their car was destroyed by an explosion and added that the victims were one European, one Kenyan and two Somalis.

One local resident who was close to the scene of the explosion said the group was driving back from the main Kismayo hospital when the blast occurred.

"Some aid workers were killed in Kismayo today," local human rights activist Hasan Kafi told AFP. "They were coming back from the hospital and heading back to their house when a roadside bomb hit their car."

"A white man..., a Kenyan and their driver were killed, as well as a local journalist who was passing by," he said.

MSF's regional office confirmed that an incident had taken place in Kismayo but could not release more information.

A doctor at Kismayo hospital said the bodies of two foreigners and two Somalis had been brought in and added that another Kenyan was being treated for injuries.
