Somalia Media Guide

Post by American-Suufi »

Who owns the different Somali media? Radio, T.V and most influential websites.

Although Somalia was the last African country to be formally connected to the internet, the huge Somali diaspora in the West, the Gulf states and elsewhere has driven the development of a rich Somali internet presence. A large variety of Somali chat rooms and news websites have now been operating for a number of years.

Since then, the lack of an effective national government has meant that the local internet and telecoms industries have been unregulated - and have thrived as a result. A number of mobile phone operators and internet service providers (ISPs) have entered the market. With no taxes or franchise fees to pay, connection and call charges are low. Mogadishu's internet cafes boast some of the lowest rates in Africa.

There are said to be more than 200 Somali news websites, with the "vast majority" of hits to these sites coming from Somalis living abroad (African Media Development Initiative Research Project 2006).

Not all sites are so valuable, however. Journalistic standards can be poor. Plagiarism is a problem. News already reported on other sites or by foreign sources such as the BBC is recycled, often with some delay and without attribution to the original source. Some sites clearly serve the news agenda of specific political and militia factions, thereby following the earlier tradition of major faction leaders each operating their own radio station.

Different groups/Clans own and operate Somali Radios/News sites. You pretty much find all kinds of clan colored perspectives, browsing through the different websites. We even have fanatic sites like Al qaadisiya (scary!). Only very few sites can claim to have measure of neutrality. However, even those sites don't always scape the audience complaints of Clan subjectivity.

The only Somali TV I'm familiar with is Universal TV. Considering their limited resources, they are doing a fantastic job. Too bad we don't get it here in North America.
