why does he still have a gaal first name, I understand that one cannot change the names of their grandparents, but atleast change your first name to something Islamic.

I am liking the sound of what I am hearing here, but let's be careful about the level of expectation we create.

Andre Carson was elected to fill out his grandmother's unexpired term. He is family, but she was not a Muslim. Congressman Carson's name is in no special way Muslim. His opponents did not make religion an issue in the election. He is going to have to run again in May for a term of his own and his opponents of neither party are likely to let him get away with another sympathy vote.

I will reserve my optimism on this one.

Grant,

Why would it bother anyone including you, that he is muslim? What happened to your Ideology of freedom of religion, speech etc?
Why can't we have high hopes? Are you saying America is against Islam?

Grant,

Well spoken. However, it does raise the possibility of it happening again.

Never the less, we will see how successful other Muslim candidates can be. I sometimes wonder why none get elected from the large Arab districts in Michigan.

Kambuli,

It's not a matter of ideals. It is a matter of the possible. Before John Kennedy a Catholic could not be elected President because it was feared American policy would be run from the Vatican.
