I can't believe such spending while our people were starving to death every day.

Gen. Aideed,
80% of that money was spent overseas and since there was no Somali govt, there was no one to hold them accountable

Refresh my memory.
In 1993 Aideed was preventing food aid from reaching inland, especially into the Eelay, Rehanweyn and Digil areas. Half a million eventually died of starvation.
I don't know the dollar figures, but the UN had food aid and staff available and Clinton had three battle ships waiting offshore capable of flattening Mog. Clinton became convinced by Blackhawk Down that a civil war was in progress, essentially that the situation was not ripe for peacekeepers. Clinton and the UN withdrew.
Considering all UN resources and costs, I can believe $2M/day during the active period.

Grant,
The UN intervention was a disaster. UNITAF lead by George H. Bush was a success but the follow on mission was a disaster. It is also wrong to put the blame of the starvation solely at the late General's feet.

AW,
I don't deny it was a disaster. Who can? I am aware of the several diiplomatic botches that occurred.
What I am saying is that I can believe the size of the UN committment was on the order of $2M/day.
You can say what you want, but I know the US and UN considered their part a humanitarian relief mission that was thwarted by one of several sides in a civil war. Fifteen years later the immaturity of the political situation is still apparent, and many of the same problems are still there on the ground.
There is plenty of blame to go around.

Grant,
I opposed the intervention due to the destabilizing effects of it. If there had been no intervention, the war would have concluded in at the end of 1993 at the latest.
The Operation Restore Hope (ORH) breathed life into the conflict by providing opportunities for the weaker factions to hold out for a better deal in the hopes that the strongest faction would be crushed for them by the UN & USA.

Agreed,
Also the way the UN gave warlords status and invited them to conferences was a big mistake.

Aliyah,
They used to fly from the Airport to their base by helicopter. A total of 3-5 minute journey.
The whole airport was all foreign operated and ran.
The sad part is there was little left to show for when they left in 1995

The only reason you oppsed ORH was to crush the Abgaal and have them flee their own region and to starve millions of Rahanweyn and other somalis so that Aidid could finally claim to be the victor ans sit on the throne in Villa somalia..well that wasnt gonna happen even tif the US and the UN didnt intervene..
Well thats sad but understandable coming from you.at the time....but you still holding that grudge is really sickening.
