AMAL FRANCHISE: Inspiration for Somali Corporatism!

Before I start, I'd like to say that I just got back from a brief tour of a Sudanese message board. I was shocked. They fully acknowledge that over 100 ethnic and tribal groups live there and they are all very optimistic towards one another. On the forum were Dinka, Sudanese "Arabs," and many other groups. What surprised me was how Afrocentric the "Arabs" were. They were very proud of their Nubian past (they are just Nubians who speak Arabic) and are extremely nice and welcoming compared to the anti-Islamic and inflammatory southern tribes. Wallahi they are more in-tune with their heritage than Somalis; they make us look like a bunch of Arab-wannabe rejects. They were all well-spoken and educated too.

Anyway, I was just reminded of what nationalism was. And I thought I'd share with you my experiences with the Sudanese (Bilat al-Sudan, "Land of the Blacks").

I'm only here to present the five corporate branches of Amal Enterprises, a small money transfer ring turned into one of Africa's fastest growing corporations. From one tiny stall to several million-dollar Plazas and corporate headquarters. If I ever come into contact with disposable income, I'd choose first to invest in Somalia and the people there. Providing jobs is the first service that any business should do and more should be located at home. Amal is a decent start with 3 out of 5 of its locations in Somalia. There are many positive developments in Somalia, and I'll start noting them.

Amal operations in Somalia are entirely money transfer. Amal ("Plaza") operations in Kenya and South Africa are shopping and other enterprises. Amal can afford to build a huge Plaza in Somalia, but the people cannot afford the products within.

I'm sure Amal investors would love to have a real Plaza in Somalia, but our people just can't afford to pay for luxuries like fast food, import clothing, and other unnecessary items. One day, though, I see a major Amal Plaza opening in a bustling Somali town where the people no longer have to struggle for their meals, a time when they can afford to take their families out once a week or more. It'll come soon.

Good to know. So, do they get most of their revenue from these shopping plaza's or money transfer?

Its definitely money transfer. That's what brings the bacon home for Amal. They use that money to earn extra income from shopping and the side details. But, say, 10-20 years from now, when Somalia is no longer dependent on its diaspora, Amal will become a major service corporation in Somalia; probably a retail brand like Wal-Mart or Target.
