The 1969 Coup in Somalia?

Post by King-of-Awdal »

I just have a few question about what happened. Why did the Coup take place, what was the Logic or reason behind it. Also was the President Killed in the Capital or somewhere else and did he have a state funeral. How long was it after his death that did the Coup happen. My major question is back than somali people were used to voting for their president so when the Coup took place did the administartion give a time table for an election. Finally who killed the President and did he get caught. Lastly if any of you would recommend a book i can read that talks about what happened and prefferably a one which is written by a non-somali.

Why would you want to read a book on Somalis written by a non-Somali? Its like asking for the biography of Jesus (pbuh) from a Chinese author.

The single greatest book on Somali people and their history since colonialism is:

"Unraveling Somalia: Race, Violence, and the Legacy of Slavery" -- by Ali A. Abdi

A masterpiece. Fun fact, slavery was abolished by the British in Somalia in 1920. It deals with everything up to the civil war.

Monk, to be quite honest slavery was abolished by Italians, even the biyomaal who many Somalis thought were fighting for liberation were actually fighting to keep their slaves since they heavily depended on it and Italy said its need to be abolished thou some Italians in Somali had concubine slaves and what not.

P.s

About the 1969 revolution in Somalia. I am too tired at the moment to write about it, but I will soon.

I was taking a shot in the dark between Italians and Brits, its been a while since I read the book. The book mentions Geledi and some other groups having slaves and Harti moving in during the late 1800s to settle in Ogaden-founded areas.

I found Page 67 to be of interest.

the 60's and 70's were eras marked by coup d'etats in Africa. even without the assassination of Abdirashid (AUN), there would have been a high chance of a coup d'etat in Somalia. why, a number of coup d'etats have been attempted against Siyad Barre

The President was killed in Las Anod by his bodygaurd.

There was a fighting between 2 MJ sub-clans, The Presidents and his Bodyguard belonged to the 2 different sub-clans. The bodygaurd wanted to revenge against the Presidents sub-clan, however as far as I know, The government wasnt involved in the clan fighting.

Somalia was in a bad situation after that happened, Therefore the coup was necessary.
