Who were the Somalis fighting against 17yrs?colleague asked
Help me to answer this Q, and please do not attack or blame any clan/qabiil on its own but give your view!
So today at work, my colleague a church goer I mean a very strict Christian guy asked, who were the Somalis fighting against for 17 years? Immediately replied NO ONE adding: It was an international war involving many nations like; US, Pakistan, Belgium, Italy, Uganda, Ethiopia, etc and of-course Somalis. Both Muslims and Non-Muslims
Who was the enemy, he asked?
Any suggestions

That question needs no answer. And if it does, the answer quite obvious...

"Who was the enemy, he asked?"
salafi_student, the enemy is qabiil hebel hebel...Do we really know this particular qabiil hebel hebel? Well, not exactly since each Somali qabiil sees the other an enemy to this day; hence how they sit idle and content to spinning off tribal misdeeds.
A few irresponsible greedy Somalis are denying Somalia peace, but we are blind to this fact since each qabiil is ready to dispatch its militia in defense of their greedy men.
For the Somali people the past three decades have brought nothing but sorrow, pain, tears and fear that can never be forgotten nor compensated completely. You would think by now we would learn from our past mistakes to avoid anymore bloodshed, but it seems that's not even the case since we are ready to bounce on each others throat now more then ever before.

Re: Who were the Somalis fighting against 17yrs?colleague asked
My initial theory was:
It was all down to balance of payments, in practice government I.e. Siyaad Bares collected taxes from the people (budget), and the money then use to go to the World Bank, But why?to pay off the existing dept http://www.imf.org/external/np/tre/tad/...n_flag=YES not forgetting the high interest that comes with it, rather than having money available for funding the key public services from Raas Caseyr to Raas Kanboni. Under funded Schools, Hospitals etc created unhappiness of the people, then the Siyads government desperation to keep up its commitment pushed - forced to borrow even more money from the world bank some times for their own security purposes, military or tribal investment for future protection as angry people SSDF, USC, SPM, SNM and many more tried to over through Siyad Bares regime. Plus angry people became unproductive therefore the few foreign investors existed in the time left the country and trade deficit increased meaning imports of goods mainly food as it were over exceeded home grown Banana exports- causing very high inflation i.e. useless Shilings, high unemployment increased JAAD chewing, reduction of tax revenue and which in turn forced the government to increase the taxes to keep up its balance. For this economically delicate in late 1980s of the country, living conditions became inoperable and then people looked to make differences to their lives either by immigrating abroad as economic migrants or taking up arms and looking for a radical change. THE CYCLE WENT ON Until Today Qadarul Laah.
I could expand to what happened after 1992 - to the plans of the USCs Ceydiid, SSDFs C/lahi Yusuf, SNMs C/tuur. Its Interesting facts!

This may have single fact to the very initial situation, but it does not really indicate who the enemy was. In fact you all made quite reasonable attempt to answers, then again if we were to ask 100s Somalis to the same question we would get 100s theories.
What does civil-war mean, and what are the fruits out of it begs to know for Somalis.

I felt is rather appropriate to reactivate this topic since gun-shots are never silent.

Re: Who were the Somalis fighting against 17yrs?colleague asked
The enemy was the warlords who were fighting against each other, and their patrons Ethiopia and America/Europe that were supplying them weapons and arms. The warlords who were killing, raping and looting civilians. The warlords who set up isbaaros to extort illegal tax from the poor. The warlords who collected $millions by allowing Western companies to dump toxic waste into Somalia. Ali Mahdi, Qanyare, Yalahow, Aidid Jr., Finish, Maxamed Dheere, Hiraale, Riyaale, boss Abdullahi Yusuf and others. The same warlords who are part of the TFG.
