Whats the explanation that the prophet CSW gave to the meaning of some Quranic verses??
i.e Alif Laam Miim etc..
I am curious to know what the prophet said about these verses...and what the companions aske about it??

Waraa Ileey,
I heard scholar's say 'this is something that only Allah SW truely knows, it's one of the mysteries of the Quran, we can only speculate' and I also heard another Scholar say 'there r 16 Miraclous words in the Quran including alif laam mim, whose meaning is unknown from normal person, only Allah SW knows its meaning'
But by far this is the best explanation I have heard. ALIF LAM MIM are letters of the Arabic alphabet as I'm sure you know it. They are known as huruf muqatta-at, letters used as abbreviations for words which have a definite meaning of sublime and profound nature known only to Allah, His last prophet, and His Ahl ul Bayt, the true divinely chosen successors, the holy Imams. Particularly, these types of symbolic alphabets, used in some of the surahs of the Quran, as a part of those surahs, are beyond the comprehension of (even) the most learned intellectuals. It is strictly prohibited to use imagination and discretion in finding out its purport and meaning.
There are six surahs including al Baqarah, which begin with ALIF, LAM, MIM. The others are Ali Imran, Ankabut, Rum, Luqman and Sajdah.
Allahu Alum.

"known only to Allah, His last prophet, and His Ahl ul Bayt,"
1man..what are you Shia?? what has Ahlul bayt got to do with this?? and if the prophet knew about it..why didnt he explain?? arent these legitimate Qs?? I sure would've asked him CSW if I was present in his day.
Again what did Muhammed CSW say about it??

Ahl ul Bayt.. isnt something which is only ascribed to the Shia's!! Sunnis also acknowledge them and respect them. Where we differ is that Shia's give more meaning to Ahl ul Bayt than the companions and particularly Ali over anything or anyone else.
No one knows the combination of letters and what they mean. It is one of the miracles of the Quran, wasn't explained by anyone and something we will come to know InshaAllah in Akira.

Only Allah SWT Truly Knows and that's what we were told by Abu Bakr (RA), Cumar (RA), Cuthman (RA) and Ali (RA), along with Ibn Mas'ud (RA) so noone can claim to know the answer.
Different scholars have different opinions so because there is Ikhtilaf, we can follow the opinion we think makes the most sense to us. Personally, i agree with Ibn Taymiyah (RA) and i think the inidividual letters are mentioned as proof of the Qur'an being a miracle and also as a challenge to produce something like it. Allah SWT sometimes writes only 1 letter (Nuun), 2 letters (Xaa Miim), 3 letters (Alif Laam Miim), 4 letters (Alif Laam Miim Ra') and 5 letters (Kaaf Haa Yaa Cayn Saad)...and the language of arabic (in speech) usually consists of 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 letter words...so Allah might be showing us that these same letters the arabs of Arabia used to communicate with each other were the same letters the Qur'an itself was written in, but they still can't make anything close to the same as it in quality, even though it is written in plain and clear Arabic. Allah Knows Best.
