Somali Pirates: Criminals Not Heros

These pirates are a devastating effect on Somalia:

1. Pirates hijack ships carrying carrying food aid to starving Somalis & even those carrying merchant goods to Somalia. They don't discriminate only against foreign vessels that are illegally fishing in Somali waters but go for anything they can seize

2. Increase shipping costs due to higher risk assessments for sailing into Somalia which is then passed on to the Somali consumer who relies on imports. If u are trying to find a cargo vessel into Somalia (Berbera to Kismayo) you will pay top dollar due to the ship owner worrying about these criminals.

3. Ransoms create instability in the pirates land as it creates an environment where every gunslinger wants a piece of the action. Once the payoff occurs, there is an uptick in crime onshore.

Insurance goes sky high...

I agree they are criminals, they would be heros if they organised themselves as coastguards and impounded, prosecuted and fined this ships that were illegally in somali waters.

Aliyah99,

Well put. I don't like how some people romanticize these crooks as being noble when the truth is that they hurt the Somali people more than they help them

In the long term, its only making their situation (or at least the economy) worse. Because they commit piracy, food prices will go up leading to more poverty..

Vicious circle

$700,000 from one ship, $800,000 from another

These guys collect over $3million per year. They make more than they need.

Cabdallah,

Watch how much more u will have to pay for shipping to Bosaso.

Btw, Could you give me the name of a good shipping company that can transport some equipment to Galkacyo ?

^Same as the counterfeited money printers, as long as they get rich they dont give a phuck while theyre ruining the economy by printing billions of shillings by the hour.
