Race and Identity?...................

i have been hearing massive discussions on race and identity. Why is it a big deal whether you are black/white/chinese or anything, i was watching one african american that criticised east africans for denying to call themselves as black. Some of us would say we are black,,,,,,,,,some would say hell we are not black,,,,,,,,,,some would say we have dark skin but we are still somalis, eritreans and ethios etc,,,,some would say we have no ancestarys who were slaves in american therefore can not be called black,,,,,,,,,,,,,some would say we have different features to most africans that we are not black.


what is the issue for you? do u consider youself black or not and why?

and why do people keep saying we have arab blood........thats why some deny the term black?.

the african american argument is that no matter what you call yourself, your still black to the white man......if your in a line up or someone gives a description of you they will say black man,,,,,,,,,,,,,not a somali man etc.

In the United States, Americans are so racially conscious. Going by the one drop rule, we would all be under the term black. But that term black is so simple and blank. The term fits the black americans b/c they can't identify their country of origin. Why should we fall under that term when we clearly know our origin and are very proud of it? So in essence, I always check other and write in Ethiopian American.

although I understand where u guys are comming from, I still consider myself black somali african, the other day an old african american guy came over to converse with me just because I was african and I can tell it made him feel good knowing his ancstors and mine walked on the same continent, ofcourse we east africans stand out but just go with the flow and I always make sure to state that I am SOMALI first!
