Re: Languages of Somalia.
Subhanallah one learns new things everyday
..i was only aware of Somali, Af May May (had a friend who spoke it) and Michini (only came to know about this language few years ago) seems like we're not really as homogenous as we thought.
Who knew Af Somali is called Af Maxaad Tiri? lol

Re: Languages of Somalia.
I can understand a quater of af Eelaay, and so do most Somali parents I know. Its a fact that the Af Somlai that we speak is a bastard version of Somali influenced to the point of it sounding pidgin in comparison with the dialects spoken by Digil and Mirifle. Unfortunately the bastard language won, then came the bastard latin text....

Re: Languages of Somalia.
Enlightened~Sista, Af May is also Af Somali!...Af Somali breaks into two different groups. Af Maxaa tiri (Majority of Somalis speak this one), and Af Maay Maay (only Digil&Mirifle=Rahaweyn speak this one).
Af Gimini also known as Af Baraawe...only Bravanese (Baraawes) speak this one...it is very close to Swahili.
I don't believe there is such thing called Af Tunni...these so called researchers or linguists want to prove to the world that Somalia is not a homogenous country after all
..Gibil Cad oo dhan are classified under Tunni! There are some that speak only Somali but a different dialect then most of us.
Emperior5, I don't understand their dialect as well. Its so hard man..but I try to understand

Re: Languages of Somalia.
Gibil cad oo dhan are classified as Tunni? WTF??? No they are not! Anything that is lighter than the rest of Somalis are classified as Gibil Cad but they are not. Some of the "Gibil Cad" are Digil(which consist of 7 tribes and all have different dialects, however have a common dialect which is the maay maay or maay maay that reer Afgooye speak which is different to what the Mirifle/Raxaween speak) and Reer Xamar(which consist of few other qabiils and they all speak Maxatiri) and also some other qabiils that go under Mirifle. Tunni is a qabiil and is either Digil or Mirifle I can't remember. But do not dare to call all the light skinned tribes Tunni.. is like calling Isaaqs Darood... now imagine how insulted/offended an Isaaq person would be being called Darood? You know because they all dark skinned?Shankaroon_614 wrote:Enlightened~Sista, Af May is also Af Somali!...Af Somali breaks into two different groups. "Gibil cad" do you know the meaning of that? Which you like to be called "Lamagoodle or Mukulaal Madow"? It sounds very rude doesn't it? Well Gibil Cad is also rude as it means piece of white meat!

How come horta you see raxanweyns and reer xamar people that range from Idi Amin look-alikes to white people? Most somalis look a like but it is not the same for the non-somalis living in Somalia.

Hyperactive,
Muqdisho has different dialects, there's Xaayoow spoken by abgaal & murusade, there's reer Xamar spoken by cad cadka, then there are others. Which one don't you understand?
