Graduates...

Post by Madd_Scientist_ »

I know there are quite a few students on here but are there any graduates on snet? If so what did you graduate in and are you working within that field? What were your expectations before getting the job, have your expectations changed from when you were at Uni?

What made you choose that particular field?

Graduated in Business...and a few weeks after graduation ended up working in the field of Finance, which was great...I remember being sooooo excited lol

My expectations were about the same, though it can sometimes take months to find a job, i was confident that I could find one alhamdulilaah. The thing that gave the confidence was that I had worked a few jobs WHILE i was getting my degree...so I knew that if i could get such jobs on a part time basis without a degree...I could get a decent full time job after the degree....so I guess previous work experience gave me that confidence. I know people who've struggled getting a job....so its different for everyone.

What made me choose that field was....because i was just so interested in the way that major business operate and the degree allows you to work in a big field, its non restrictive alhamdulilaah....the other day i was even reading that a degree in business was the most popular degree at the moment and maybe even the most saught after degree by business.

Why do you ask? Are you doing a degree at the mo or thinking of doing one?

PYT 20-

Thanks for that...

No, i'm just curious as to how many graduates we've got on here. When i graduated, i was the only somali doing a chemistry degree, and there weren't a lot of somalis at uni either maybe 2 or 3. Even at work i'm the only black person (let alone somali) at a company with ~300 employees. So i don't really know any somali graduates.

So is this something you see yourself doing for a very long time? Or are you thinking of changing careers?

Business Management graduate and I am now moving to corporate finance. Before my current job I have worked in all sorts of jobs to perfect my people and business skills. From Customer service to HR and now Finance.

I have been around people in Corparate finance and somehow developed an interest and when I went for my interview it was a walk over.I knew answers to every question they asked manshaAllah. It been through hard work and believe in Allah I must say but it feels good to get there finally.

I hope to stay with my current employer for a long time and one day I might end up in senior management ( My goal) It will be tough but I will get their one day inshaAllah and defy what alot of people say.

I must say reading posts from some members in this website can easily make someone give up!

Wow! Maasha allah, that is really impressive, the only black person in a company with 300 people...go on bro! :D

Well I've since then after just over 2yrs quit the job and moved away and studying arabic now....but i do think about getting back to the work place, coz after not working for now 10months or so.....i'm kinda missing it and getting bored haha.....missing work....weird i know!

U know...i've got a similar experience when i was at uni, at my uni......i was i think the only somali girl, and there were about 4 other somali guys...and it was a large campus...but i have to say....since that time, somali youth are really stepping up their game and more and more are getting into uni and those not in uni are aspiring to it :P so thats great...as a community, we're taking a step forward, hopefully without taking 2 steps back!

Offcourse! You work and study part time and once you finish your masters you somehow proceed to PHD as your UNI wont leave you alone!

There is no end to education. You finish one course and you feel bored and want to start another course! I now understand why lecturers have all those titles!

WestLndShawty...

No i decided not to do a Master's degree straight away, though I wanted to do one eventually....I was really excited about getting my first official full time graduate job (and my own salary not to mention!)....but some of my fellow class mates did opt to do a Masters straight away, and its true what they say, it does give u and edge....it depends on what u want to do really.

Part time is way more rewarding. Masters is more complex and more application to real life work related cases. Also when you work and study you some how test those theories in real life and see how they work !

It is not just about reading and doing assignments! Depending on what course you do!

I see.

In my field, A Master's degree gives you a greater advantage; i think with masters you'll get approximate 10g's more in your salary *so i've heard*.

You're right, it definitely gives you the upper hand over you peers and can give you that extra confidence when it comes to thinking about promotion, a payrise or applying for new positions all together.

I'm with you on the 'getting it over and done with asap!' why take twice the time when u can do it in half? But maybe Leila's got a point too...i dunno...but i just think that an extended stress period over assignments is something that should be avoided whenever possible, because it will interfere with whatever work you're doing on the side. Working a full time job is stressful enough without having Masters deadlines to worry about.....

How did u deal with it Leila?

I do agree with what you are saying but it depend what field / Post grad you ar doing. Mine was more work based so didnt have much choice really. Time went so quick didnt even realise! Stress will always be there but for me it was fun using big words on my manager at the time who kept promoting me!

Education is fun! It is stressfull that is for sure but when it comes to work place you certainly intimidate people! I went for an interview the other day and somehow the whole interview ended up in what I did for my dissertaion. Boy did I just go on and on.......talk about having an expert knowledge!

I must say you end up spending all your weekends in a library that is the only down side. We use to have a 24 hours access and 2 am people are still studying !
