Car Experts

Post by eternauta »

I have some questions:

1. In the morning, when you start the car, how long do you have to wait before you move it?

2. Do you save gas by driving the car at a moderate (i.e. -60mph) or fast (i.e. +60mph) speed?

3. If you're driving from point A to point B (distance of 25 miles), do you reach point B a lot faster (like 10 minutes earlier) if you're driving at 70mph than 60mph?

4. When you stop at a rail crossing that could take 3-5 minutes, do you put shift on N, P, turn off engine or keep on brakes until the train passes?

5. In a congested highway, which lane (left, middle, right) is preferable to keep on so that you might reach your destination as soon as possible?

6. When is the best time (night time, noon, early morning, etc) to fill up your tank so that you might save gas as much possible?

Thanks.

1.normally its good to wait about 5-10 mins to warm up your car.

2 driving 55mph is the safest if you're worried about gas.

3.the third question is just pure physics, the faster you drive the more fuel you'll burn.

4. i'm not sure about the railroad tracks question, i just turn off the engine.

5.for question 5, use common sense, merge into whatever line thats moving...duh.

6. tuesdays or wednesday mornings is the best time to fill up.

Most people do it, especially if you are in a cold area. If its extremely cold, you have to warm it it up before driving, otherwise you will mess up your engine. I don't usually wait if its summer time

2. Do you save gas by driving the car at a moderate (i.e. -60mph) or fast (i.e. +60mph) speed?
Cars in the highway saves a lot of gas as compared driving in the city. Most cars take 20-25 in the streets and 25-30 miles/gallon in the highway. So always take the highways when applicable

3. If you're driving from point A to point B (distance of 25 miles), do you reach point B a lot faster (like 10 minutes earlier) if you're driving at 70mph than 60mph?
That's myth. 10 mph won't make difference, probably 2 min or less. It doesn't worth getting ticket for just 2 min of your time

4. When you stop at a rail crossing that could take 3-5 minutes, do you put shift on N, P, turn off engine or keep on brakes until the train passes?
What the hell, are you telling me your park in the middle of the street? Do you want to save Gas

5. In a congested highway, which lane (left, middle, right) is preferable to keep on so that you might reach your destination as soon as possible?
The fast lane(usually left). the middle and right ones is for slow drivers

6. When is the best time (night time, noon, early morning, etc) to fill up your tank so that you might save gas as much possible?
Night time right before you go sleep
Thanks.

1. 5-10 minutes? I have read somewhere 15 seconds is enough, even in winter time.

2. The question refers to saving gas, not safety.

3. The question refers to time and speed, not fuel.

6. The condition of the weather (cold, hot) affects gas. If you fill up tank when it's cold (night time, early morning), you save gas.
