What is Energy ? in physic and other sciences energy from Greek "energos active working" is scalar physical quantity that is a property of objects and systems is conserved by nature Energy is often defines as the ability to do work energy the ability to effect change ?

Google hits tell me a lot about what energy does , and it's effects and such, but I can't find what actual energy is.
