Toronto police probe two separate slayings at same complex

TORONTO - Toronto police said Monday they are investigating two separate homicides in the same east-end Scarborough apartment complex in just over a week.

In the latest incident, one of the building's residents found the body of man, believed to be in his 20s, lying lifeless in a pool of blood in a stairwell on the ninth floor of the 22-storey highrise shortly after 2 p.m. Sunday.

Police were called to a building at 25 Cougar Court where they discovered the man dead at the scene with a bullet wound to the head.

The death was Toronto's 17th homicide of the year.

An autopsy is being performed. Police said Monday they will release more information when the post-mortem is completed.

The shooting happened 10 days after Ricardo Erik Kelly, 22, was stabbed to death in the same apartment building.

Kelly was the city's 15th homicide victim of the year. He was stabbed and also found lying in a hallway on the 20th floor of the same apartment building. Police found two knives behind the building.

No arrest has been made in that case and it remains under investigation.

Meantime, residents of the apartment were shaken by the news of another homicide in their building.

One woman said she is worried about the place being safe because she has a two-year-old child. "I can't live here anymore," she told Global News.

"Its not fair for people to be dying on my level of the building and I don't know anything about it," said another resident.

One man said it was "so scary" to live in a building where someone is "dying every week."
