Muslim dress in dangerous times..to veil or not to veil

Don't want any controversy..you might not agree with all what she said..but lets give the sister credit because she has raised some good points.
We can no longer afford to have the scarf as the core of the debate on Islam, nor as the symbol by which the level of a Muslim woman's piety or commitment to Islam is measured. We can no longer afford to have every opportunity and discussion about Islam turn into a conversation on dressing, nor can we afford as Muslim women, in our communities, to be judged and awarded degrees and ranks of religiosity according to the level of the dress code we abide by. The darker the color the better, the bigger the garment the more pious. The race of ranking morally high through fabric has no end in a path where the Taliban model seems to be the only logical conclusion. It makes more sense to judge women on matters relating to the basic tents of Islam: regular prayer, fasting, paying alms.

Why should muslim women change the way they dress because of how others may percieve them? Surely, the greatest protection is that from Allah swt, what could be better.

Gifted..noone is saying they should change but if thats what they want to do..in order to feel more safe and secure..then why should the Muslim community look down upon them..and label them bad Muslims? The diin has allowed us to take any measure necessary to safeguard ourselves from harm.
Let me give u an example..i was in a class once..and this arab man came to me and told me ' that i should cover my hair properly..other wise..my other deeds might suffer'..I just nodded my head in agreement..he should have asked me these questions> ' do i pray? 'do i pay zakah'? do i read the Qur''an etc..do i take interest? these are the important questions. I can't understand this obsession with the outer appearance.
InshaAllah the whole point of this thread is
1- Do not write off a Muslim sister who doesnt wear hijaab yet dresses modestly as a bad muslim
2- If certain sisters choose not to wear the hijaab..don't hate them for it and don't think you are better...Allah s.w.t alone knows what is in the hearts.

Somali men rape and kill each other-while lights and action are focused on somali females. No rape.

Re: Muslim dress in dangerous times..to veil or not to veil
I agree with you to a certain extent, I have no problem with a muslim female dressing the way they want. What bothers me is that they are dressing to conform with a certain society, not because they want to, but out of fear. Changing your dress code because others will be more friendly towards you is a problem, shouldn't one dress to please their Lord. I just think one should dress the way they want for the right reasons, same goes for hijabis that wear hijab because they fear their parents, which means no reward.

I've come across your example alot, and I just think its ridiculous for one to judge someone because of how they dress.

Gifted during the Prophets time (pbuh)..when the Muslims were being tortured by the pagan Arabs..they used to lie and say they were ''pagan''..out of fear...Allah s.w.t tells us in the Qur'an that this is permissable and we will not be punished for uttering such things..as long as in our hearts and minds we have complete faith and conviction in Islam.

Re: Muslim dress in dangerous times..to veil or not to veil
I have seen photos of women in hijabs in the Sixties, but I never personally saw one in Somalia. Women then covered their hair with a square of cloth that was tied on at the corners. Hair almost always protruded from the front. For formal ocassions in cities they might have added a shawl over the top. I have a hard time associating hijab, niqaab, burka, etc. with Somalis.
I keep wondering if the square of cloth tied over the hair had a name?

Hi, Grant!
The square of cloth is called:
SAFALEETI (sound more like italian to me), MALQABAD or ILYAR or even GAMBO.
Macasalaama.
Caasha-Ukun.

The veil singnifies modesty which is a branch of imaan in Islam.
There is never an excuse not to be wearing the veil if you are a women and muslim.
All this scary tactics about living in dangerous time is nothing but a hogwash and a lame atempt to discourage the sisters from wearing the hijab.
This is a perfect example of the power of the veil.

Yeah, if there is a REAL threat of losing life or limbs, then it's allowed. Asahaabi went trough a lot more than some drunk person insulting them in a street.
No how many times in the west woman was killed or mutilated because she wore a hijab? This new thing that I can't practice my religion because I'm afraid is not allowed reason in Islamic sharica and only people with very very weak iman do this, no doubt about that.
Hijab is wajib for a woman. And the time that the talk about taking it off should start is faaaaaaaaaaar away, at least in Europe or USA.
