Somalia: Dutch Ship hijackers threaten to "kill the crew"
1 Jun 1, 2008 - 4:35:32 AM
GAROWE, Somalia June 1 (Garowe Online) - Men who hijacked the Dutch-owned ship MV Amiya Scan have contacted Radio Garowe about the Puntland government's threat to storm the ship by force.
The hijackers threatened to take steps that may endanger lives of the ship crew if Puntland security forces attempt to release the ship and its crew by force from them.
Hame Mohamed Ali, who contacted Puntland-based Radio Garowe on behalf of the hijackers, said: "The Dutch ship entered Somali territorial waters illegally for illegal fishing purposes."
Mr. Hami said hijackers demand ransom although he did not specify the amount of ransom money.
"We have complained to the Puntland administration about boats and ships illegally fishing in our waters but the administration has done nothing to address this issue," the spokesman said, adding: "T he situation of the ship's crew is good."
In a Cabinet meeting last week, the Puntland administration suggested to foreign ship owners not to negotiate with or give hijackers a ransom payment.
In April, Puntland troops stormed a pirate-hijacked ship, killing one of the pirates and apprehending six others, who were later sentenced to life in prison by a Puntland court.
Piracy is a major problem along Somalia's Indian Ocean coast, with more than 20 reports of hijackings so far this year.

They are a navy, read what they are saying:
"We have complained to the Puntland administration about boats and ships illegally fishing in our waters but the administration has done nothing to address this issue," the spokesman said, adding: "The situation of the ship's crew is good."
It's their right to defend their territorial waters.
