what is hutu?

I've checked what Wikipedia (and I know its a rubbish palce) says and I got, 'Hutu is an ethnic group.' Which I already suspected or knew about, however some individuals on SNet use it frequently and I don't understand why?

I've already asked about walanweyn...and of course due to the answer I recieved I promptly forgot what they said...i.e. its not worth my brain cells.
