Gasaargude Sultan of Luuq and a Reer Baardheere Sheekh

Post by Warsame101 »

His name was Sultan Cali Xassan Nuur, a very religious guy who ruled half of Luuq, he was of Gasaargude Mirifle tribe. The other half which were inhabited by a small number of Mareexaan immigrants was out of his jurisdiction.

The tribes who used to pay him tribute were Dagoodiye, Bantus, Garre and a small community of Arabs. He established a treaty with the Italians in 1896 for his part of Luuq whilst the Mareexaan immigrants established a treaty with the Italians for their part of Luuq in 1986. A very unwise move.

Here is an image of a traditional Sheekh in Baardheere circa 1900:

^ I doubt he was that old back in the late 1800s. But he was the biggest wadaad in the city for a very long time.

Gasaargude were the overlords of the Bantus, in the truest sense. If you hear the Bantus were enslaved by Somalis, waa Gasaargude. With that said whatever happened to this clan? Were they expelled along with the Laysaan and Hadamo after the USC and Raxanweyn alliance was defeated in Gedo?

Warsame I am very happy to see you broaden the scope of your research and go for SOMALINIMO now instead of subjective clan history. Very proud of you man although you might take this offensively

Voltage -> ignored,

since I joined this forum, I doubt any of you could accuse me of being clannist nor do I change my views every week.

I am a student of history, and have provided non-Somali historical based-articles long before I joined Snet. Just because I am more interested in Mareexaan history does not indicate I ignore the rest. History starts at home, remember that, and you work you way up from there.

Shirib, it is from an Italian book called "Lugh, emporio commerciale sul Giubba".

Warsame thanks bro.

Gassar Gude had a sultunate in Luuq, I believe they used to pay some sort of tribute to Geledi. The ivory trade was big in Luuq and Baardheere in the 1800's and used to be the main comodities at the Banadir ports.

The sad history of slave trade would also be Geledi :(

How can you say you ignored me while replying to me? Isn't that a contradiction adeer? Waa hagaag, I am glad to see you expand your scope nevertheless.

Shirib, Geledi politically headed Raxanweyn but Gasaargude were the nobility. In that book it says Gasaargude look down on the Raxanweyn of whom the Geledi led. Still, my knowledge of southern Somalia and Raxanweyn in particular has broadened since I met up with you this year. Perhaps Raxanweyn were not exactly what I believed of them to be.

You have better history than majority of so-called "Samaale Soomaali' starting with the whole Hawiye nation.

However, we might as well count the Mirifle Raxanweyn as Darood. They are practically lost Darood and Dir Soomaali including Isaaq.

Digle is the one that includes the Jiidu,Tunni, and the other Somalized groups right?

Mirifle seemed to be full stock Somali who changed clan names.

It is my sincere believe that they are Facaye Sade. I cannot explain exactly but this looks like something I will devote the future into uncovering.

Gassagude are still around and doubt they are Facaye but ok.

I don't know where it is, but I read somewhere that Gassar Gude was pretty much put in place by Geledi and stayed there.

Luuq fell into the hands of the Baardheere Jamaaca, and the Gassar Gude lost there power until they were restored when Yusuf Maxamoud AUN of the Geledi defeated the Jamaaca.

I not only led all of Digil y Mirifle but Mudulood too  It was a southern thing, everyone from Xamar to Luuq and down.

Only Biimaal in Marka were able to withstand it.
"The port of Mogadishu (Mogadiscio) was practically autonomous as C. Guillian noted the Zanzibar's Sultans like his customs came and went with the monsoons. The hinterlands of Mogadhishu was controlled by the Geledi clan, who's sultan contracted alliances with many other clans in the region between Shabelle and Juba river. Through much of the century, the Geledi alliance dominated the ivory trade that ran from Luk (Lugh) on the upper Jubba to Mogadishu; the Geledi sultan also collected tribute from the agricultural clans, along the Shabelle river as far south as Brava. Only the powerful Biimaal clan situated in the hinterlands of Marka succeeded in resisting Geledi hegemony. The Sultan of Zanzibar sought to construct a fort in Mogadishu in 1870 he had to obtain approval of Sultan Ahmed Yusuf of the Geledi.
