Helping Your Community...

Post by Zaynah »

Getting involved in our community and making a difference is something that should be part of our everyday lives right?. After all helping people is the way forward if one hopes to see change within their community.

I feel that we are letting down the younger generation living overseas by focusing only the ones back home. I wish we had Somali individuals who have the courage to setup simple events not parties for EID, raves nonsense but something aimed at giving them the opportunity to share their experiences with someone who has gone thought it and is able to help them reach the next step. Perhaps a Somali awareness event could be something. Where teens come and see other Somalis showcasing something related to their needs.

This could give them a sense of hope of making their dreams become a reality I really feel for the younger generation who dont have proper family support, role models, they are disadvantaged and frustrated by it, they end up having issues such as identify, self esteem, finance problems list is endless.

If you'd like to bounce your own thoughts over this or just share something related to this feel free.

Unfortunately Somali youths are more interested in BET than getting an education and doing something with their lives.

Believe me, there are plenty of Somali community centers for the them. How many do you think actually show up?! It might sound harsh, but worry about your family and how well they're doing in life. Start from there, as a good example, and maybe you can influence the young ones that way.

thats good idea Zaynah, i just joined my local council as board management team. basically we get together once every fortnight and we dicuss what needs to be done in our area. in my area, somalis are majority, they ruled the area lol. so we discuss whats need to be done to improve our area, from crime to helping the elders. we even enforce our area to be non-alcohol zone,. which means no one is allowed to drink alcohol outside in the streets. that improves the crime rate, because then there wont be no ciyal suuq hanging outisde and causing trouble.
i just joined the management team, but hopefully my aim is to help the somali youths in that area, help them find jobs, training and education. get them of the street. and classes for somali adults who dont speak the language, and most importantly events and fun classes like henna designs, yoga and gym classes for somali mothers who sit at home all day.

Thats what everyone says why bother they don't seem intrested. Maybe they fear change, give up easily, lack confidence in themselves or simply need motivation and support from someone who wont judge them. My point is Don't judge somali youths by the bad ones you know or have seen.

Masha'allah KEEP UP THE GOOD SPIRIT! had an idea to go along with the non-alcohol zone how about no qaad zone added to that?...

I also believe that everyone deserves a second chance. We all mess up at some point thats part of growing-up. Unfortunately this may leave some feeling helpless ..but what matters is when we are given a second chance to bounce back and achieve our dreams.

Thanks guys keep them thoughts coming....

lol no qaad zone is good idea walahi.  but as you know qaad has to be banned from Britian first in order to ban it from our streets. but we need it defo. the amount of somali men and boys now with pocket full of blue bags, it hurts to know they relate to me. :( but hopefully we gonna work on that. me and a friend actually suggested we should get people to sign for BAN QAAD papers, and we get about 2, 3 even 4000 somalis. then we can take it to the govenrment. but i dont think somalis like to change it as Madd_Scientist_ said there are plenty of Somali community centers for the them but nobody turns up, some dont want help. they like the lif they lead. but is up to us to enforce changes otherwise we'll stick to the same old life style.

I remember when I was in high school we had a Careers Day where people from various occupations came to speak about their jobs. There were doctors, lawyers, firefighters, lab technicians etc. Students signed up to the jobs they were interested in. Maybe you can do this for Somali youths. All the Somali professionals can have seminars talking about their job.

I have graduated from high school 5 years ago, and although I have successfuly managed to get into a medical degree in one of the more prestigous universities in the country, I'm yet to complete even 1 semester for reasons un'known even to me. My original plan was to graduate (which should have happened by now)and immediatly get married. To get to the heart of the problem; I'm un-educated, broke and utterly horney so clearly I'm at a crossroad over here. I'm thinking.. shall I complete this long and boring degree, or shall you just start some other kind of work and make some money, or shall I go back to Somalia and just get married there for I hear its much cheaper there. I'm sharing this with you because I think zaynah is right, young somali boys need some kind of supprt. May be thats why i'm failing i just figured it out, I don't think I had a proper role model growing up. Reading this post is making me feel really good. But Zaynah since you sound like a social worker may be you can give me some guidance abaay, what do you think I should do about my personal problems. I'm 25 and accompolished nothing so far; I think I might commit suicide.

I feel that we are letting down the younger generation living overseas by focusing only the ones back home.
The ones back home are the real somalis so for us Somalis to continue to have a country, we have to help those. The ones overseas have for the most part assimilated in the host country's culture to the point that most somali elders should even continue to consider somalis. Let them get help from the people they imitate. Somalis send all your money to Somalia and stop worrying about overfed motherfockers with terrible upbringing in the west.

I do my bit for the Somali community. I tutor young kids in science, anyone who wants my help is more than welcome. I am there for them if and when they need it. Problem is they don't want it. There's only so much one can do.

I am not a social worker, I'm sorry to hear that you're going through such a difficult time. I can only imagine how hard it is for you, having been forced to pull out of your education because something has interferered with your learning is a tough thing to face up to. However don't get all bent out of shape due to having had such a huge set back. perhaps you need to do some soul searching look into your life a bit deeper nothing is wrong with taking time out for a while and coming back to finish up your degree if that is what you still want to pursue. It happens :) have you tried speaking to someone at your university they might be able to provide you support. You would be amazed to learn that they can be understanding and willing to assist you if you approach the right people.

All I am trying to point out to you is that you first have to make up your mind what do you want to do with your life? Forgot what people expect from you or what pressures your being put under, once you have decided on that.. You will finish your degree or anything you want to do in life because once you have prepared yourself and know what your are up against. You can than take advantage of the support out there.

As for starting a family that is another issue, me personally I don't think it's wise settling down if you hope that it will bring more joy into your life, yes marriage is a blissful act, But one has to understand it comes with its own ups and downs so if you're not mentally ready to face the challenges it brings, then you will be faced with greater misery.

Don't let your past haunt you for the rest of your life. Look past it and enjoy the present.

Good Luck! and I hope I have been helpful.

What community? Somalis are soo divided theres no such thing as one community or one spokes person. Thats why somalis are an easy target in the UK.
