June 26, 2008: In Mogadishu, the Islamic radical refuse to join the peace deal recently hammered out, unless the Ethiopian troops withdraw. But Ethiopia will not pull its troops out until the Islamic radicals give up on their efforts to take control of Ethiopia's Ogaden province (long in dispute between the two countries). The peace deal calls for Ethiopian withdrawal once a UN peacekeeping force is in place. That might take a while.

The 17 years of violence in Somalia isn't unusual. The sustained peace from the 1970s to 1991, now that was unusual. The Somali clans have been fighting each other for centuries. There's a warrior culture in Somalia that admires murder and theft. Check out the history of the region. Somalis have long been feared by their neighbors because of the culture of violence. Somali raiders have long terrorized Ethiopia and Kenya. Thus the refusal to make peace isn't unusual, it's what's expected. The Islamic radicals that refuse to buy into the recent peace deal are acting in accordance with a long tradition of homicidal irrationality. As a result, several hundred people were killed or injured in Mogadishu in the week after the peace deal was signed. The majority of Somalis want peace, but they have to either kill the Islamic radicals, or persuade them to join the peace. Islamic radicalism is nothing new for Somalia either. Comes along every few generations, and sometimes that causes spectacular violence for a while.

So far this year, over 20,000 Somalis have fled to Kenya, where refugee camps have been established along the border. Many of the refugees are fleeing starvation (drought, or bandits stealing foreign aid food), not the clan violence. There are nearly half a million Somalis living as refugees throughout the region, mainly in Kenya.

Nine staff members of foreign aid organizations are currently being held for ransom. The aid groups are seen as a source of loot by many Somalis, who then act accordingly. These criminal activities are keeping food, and other aid, from reaching 20-30 percent of the 2.5 million Somalis that need it. One reason the UN wants to get its own peacekeepers in is to provide better security for aid workers and food shipments.

June 25, 2008: Nigeria has a battalion of 800 peacekeepers ready for movement to Somalia. There are already 1,600 Ugandans and 600 Burundians there, but they do little but defend themselves, and the main airport at Mogadishu.

June 24, 2008: A Dutch ship, and its crew of nine, were freed. They had been hijacked on May 25th. Apparently, ransom was paid.

June 23, 2008: Somali pirates kidnapped four Europeans from a yacht anchored off the coast of Yemen. The captives were brought back to Somalia, and are being held in the hills along the Somaliland-Puntland border. Ransom is demanded. Ransom is increasingly popular among armed Somalis. The word about how many Somalis are suddenly prosperous from large ransoms, is rapidly spreading and inspiring thousands of armed men.

June 22, 2008: Al Qaeda has issued another video in which Somalis are urged to resist UN peacekeepers and help establish Somalia as an Islamic terrorist sanctuary. This idea is popular with a minority of Somalis.

Any responsible Somali group or individual including the "Islamic Radicals" would not consent the soveriegty of Somalia to be passed around by foreigners who have no business in being Somalia in the first place.

Why would they consent the replacement of one foreign oppressor with another?

The problems in Somalia are due mostly to the Somalis overseas, they are comfortable with their lifestyle and have to ingrate themselves into useess qabiil politics that causes problems for the innocent in Somalia. The disinformation terminolgy that is detectable both in Minot's BBC report and in the Boggers article only makes sense if we assume the West is now resolved in losing millions of Somalis to mass starvation if that would keep Somalia from being turned to Islamic enclave. Otherwise why would they now decide to preemtively blame SOMALI CLANS, SOMALI CIVIL WAR, DROUGHT LACK OF RAIN, as the cause of the coming starvation, and not the Ethiopian invasion which they subsidized

Also, the very fact that on the eve of such mass starvation the West has resorted to pointing the finger on dought and innocent somali clans as the culprit is suggestive enough what might tragically unfold in Somalia.

Wanted: Foreign navy to escort UN food to Somalia


World Food Program lends hand to preemptive strikers


NAIROBI (AFP) - Somalia faces a serious food crisis if no nation steps forward with naval ships to escort relief shipments through pirate-infested waters, the UN World Food Programme (WFP) said Thursday.



A Dutch frigate now is in its last weeks shepherding two WFP-chartered vessels which shuttle between the Kenyan port of Mombasa to Somalia. where the United Nations warns 3.5 million will need food relief by year's end.

"We need a foreign navy to take over the escort system before mid-July when we hope to send a ship from Durban, South Africa loaded with WFP food to Mogadishu," WFP spokesman Peter Smerdon told AFP.

"WFP has still not recieved any confirmed offer from any foreign navy, but we have been in contact with many governments and pray that someone will step foward."

Somalia's waters are among the most pirate-infested in the world -- leading the UN Security Council earlier this month to authorise foreign warships to enter Somali waters to combat piracy and armed robbery at sea.

The WFP's appeal comes as it seeks to double the amount of food it ships to Somalia with a view to feeding 2.3 million people a month, Smerdon said.

Since November last year, French and Danish frigates have escorted WFP shipments to Somalia, which has been gripped by lawlessness since the 1991 ouster of dictator Mohamed Siad Barre.

Aid groups have scaled down operations in the face of growing insecurity, largely blamed on Islamist militants who have waged a guerrilla war since their ouster by Somali and Ethiopian forces in early 2007.

Smerdon said: "If humanitarian assistance cannot reach Somalia because of piracy, we fear that we could see scenes similar to the 1992-1993 famine in Somalia that cost hundreds of thousands of lives."

Isn't the presence of Ethiopian army in Somalia with western backing the real evil cuase if this upcoming mass starvation?

If the West cannot protect millions of Somalis from starvation, and since they are the ones that cuased it, why wouldn't they leave and work with whoever can make a difference in Somalia before it is too late?

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Somalis face mass starvation, with snipers, bombers and kidnappers increasingly targeting aid workers and civilians in the war-torn African nation, aid organization Doctors Without Borders said on Thursday.

The group, also known by its French name Medecins Sans Frontieres or MSF, has withdrawn international staff amid the humanitarian crisis because of violence from an Islamist-led insurgency against the Somali government and its Ethiopian military allies.

Violence against civilians has come from all sides, MSF said in a teleconference with reporters in New York. Internal refugees are crammed into unsanitary shelters while prices for rice and corn have tripled since the start of 2008.

"Every time we think that it can't get much worse, it does. ... We feel we have reached a new low," said Nicolas de Torrente, executive director of MSF in the United States.

"Aid workers are increasingly targeted in Somalia, kidnapped, killed," he said.

The Mogadishu-based Elman Peace and Human Rights Organization estimates 2,136 civilians have been killed this year, bringing the civilian death toll to 8,636 since the insurgency began in early 2007 -- the latest in a cycle of conflict since the 1991 fall of a military dictator.

The United Nations says 1 million Somalis -- one-ninth of the population -- are living as internal refugees, and MSF said malnutrition has exceeded emergency rates for a year.

"People sell everything they have to buy extra food. Then they drop out the expensive food items that are usually the most nutritious. Finally they start to ration what they do have. And finally they are in the very difficult situation of having to decide which members of the family are expendable," said Greg Elder, the deputy operations manager in Somalia.

One MSF nutrition program in Mogadishu is flooded with 3,000 children with an additional 500 arriving every week.

"In that center over half of patients are women and children wounded by blasts or gunshot wounds," Elder said.

Benoit Leduc, MSF's operations manager in Somalia, said the killing and kidnapping of aid workers have been chilling.

"Each time we go in a car we fear we will be caught in a cross fire," Leduc said. "We fear to be hit by a roadside bomb. We fear to be kidnapped. So this is the frustration. We are not able to respond adequately to the needs."

If the West brought the Ethiopian Army to Somalia and the Ethiopian Army is responsible for the present mass stravation why then aren't the aid workers focusing on the real evil doers?

Again, the language of the aid workers is very consistent with BBC's Minot report and Western bloggers. It a clear preemtive strategy that is intended to blame the upcoming mass stravation on Somalis themselves.
