Nigeria: G8 Worried Over Country's Nuclear Programme

This Day (Lagos)

Nigeria's nuclear programme is causing concern among the world's Group of Eight (G8) nations, THISDAY has learnt.

The G8 - comprising world's most industrialised democracies, the United States (US), United Kingdom (UK), Japan, Russia, Italy, France, Germany and Canada - is worried about Nigeria's ability to handle the safety and security obligations associated with use of nuclear technology.

The US has been leading the campaign against uranium enrichment for nuclear technology by Iran and North Korea, and although Nigeria's nuclear programme is purely for power generation, the G8 nations are said to be uncomfortable with it.

Confirming this to THISDAY, the Director-General of the Nigeria Nuclear Regulatory Agency (NNRA), Professor Shamsedeen Elegba, said the G8 countries had expressed their concerns over the country's readiness to fulfil safety and security obligations associated with the establishment of nuclear power plant in the country.

NIGERIA IS THE FIRST AFRICAN COUNTRY TO HAVE NUCLEAR PLANT, I thought South Africa or Egypt would be the first!

Look at the front page of NY Times today. The terrorist card is being waved, that Islamic militants in Algeria has merged with Al-Qaeada, and that Europe is the target.

I am impressed by Algerian women. Ethnically, Algeria is 95% Arab/Berber

"Women make up 70 percent of Algeria's lawyers and 60 percent of its judges. Women dominate medicine. Increasingly, women are contributing more to household income than men. Sixty percent of university students are women, according to university researchers." Wiki

The country is rich in oil and minerals. It's also very fertile. 25% of its GDP is from the Agricultural sector. Population is 34 million.

Riighaye! We are talking about Nigeria brother, not Algeria! don't mix your Gerias.

but I get the point, Nigeria it's self is a Muslim majority country with Oil and the most populated country in Africa! They can't boycott Nigeria, since it's a democratic country and since Nigeria supplies oil to the world.

Nigeria is the richest country in Africa, the reason it's got so many problems is it ALSO has the highest population and highest income disparity.

Poor Nigerians are bloody poor but the rich Nigerians are BLOODY rich.
