Somalis who deny that they are Somali

You run into a Somali girl or Somali guys that claim that they are not Somali. Some of them with big foreheads written that they are Somali deny to be Somalis. Has Somalia became embarrassment to the point that some of them actually claim to be non Somalis?

I one of those people who would wear A Shirt with a Somalian flag or put a sticker in my car indicating that I am Somali. Where is the pride?

I've never denied that I was Somali and would never deny. However, I understand why people do especially people who are in their teens or early 20s. People in this generation don't know what a peaceful Somalia looks like. All we know is war, famine and destruction. Can you really blame these people?

But, they say 'Hadaad dhimanaysid dhareerka waa la iska duwaa', even if we are under Ethiopia right now, doest that mean we have to deny our origins? only insecure people would do such thing

Why don't you guys understand where these folks are coming from? Imagine growing up and knowing that you come from the worst country in the world. It hurts. To them, being Somali = being a failure. Just let them be.

It may be that they don't want to be bothered by people, or they just don't feel like talking to a stranger. You know how it it, once someone says Somali, they expect you to chat with them and they start asking questions--qabiil, family name etc...So sometimes I can imagine that people would just say i'm not somali in order to stop the conversation there.


As for myself, I usually have the problem with Somali people questionng my identity, because they say that I look Indian, or an Arab, uff. I like it though, when i'm on the bus or at the mall and I hear girls or guys speaking in Somali about me saying stuf, like oh look at her etc, etc lol they think that I don't understand what they are saying, and that's when I say, haye iska warama, looooool.

Well, I dont know what origin we can defend, when we are using and allow our worst enemy to eliminate the same people we call SOOMAALI. BTW, Somalinimo is DEAD, so dont waste your time by trying to revive it.

Nabeela, I was at work the other day and I saw this obviously somali girl, I was on a lunch break so I though I'd say hi. Anyway, I walked up to her and I said salaam abaayo, anyway, she looked at me and said, sorry I don't know what you just said. Taken by surprise I said, sorry I thought you were somali, she looked at me and said no, i'm not. I was shocked walaahi, I am usually good at these things, I can tell the difference btwn a Somali and other african people, inclusing eritreans. So, I just said sorry and walked off, as I was heading to the elevator I realized why she was so guarded She was with this black guy. Now, I don't want to assume anything, but i'm thinking well that makes sense, maybe she did not want to be recognized by a fellow Somali while she was with the black guy, what ever he maybe to her.
