I see few differences.

The Sayid's men murdered Sheik Aweys al Baraawe and all but one of his desciples at Biyoole in 1909. Sayidka was wounded in fighting with the Aweysiya when he tried to raise an army in the South. Pursued by the Aweysiya, he died of influenza and his wounds at Imo, in Ethiopia, in 1920.

One was 1900-1920 and killed off a third of the manpower in the North. The other is current and hasn't been around long enough to match that damage. Both have killed just enough gaals to make the headlines and make the international situation awkward. The vast majority of their victims were/are Somali. The Darwish were defeated by the British, but the Sayid was killed by a rival tariqa. We don't know the full story on the alShabaab yet.

Philosophically they seem pretty similar, which is what I intended to mean by "few differences".

They were rivals for control of the Qadiriyya, with very different philosophies. I no longer have the link with the best information here, but you can search "Subsaharan Sufis". All the historiians I have read say there is a extensive exchange of gabays between the two in which Aweys accused Sayidka of womanizing, and Sayidka accused Aweys of bidca.

Shirib,

That is Abdi Salad, one of my friends from Jilib.

Grant,

No the British never deafted the Devrish in 1919 , they just bombed their castles and forts and armed the somali nomads who took care of the rest.

The Europeans starved the somali nomads of weapons making it a prey for Ethopians and the fanatic Salihya tariqa. In the largest fort of Taleeh less then 5 Devrish stood up and fought to death among them one of the founders Haji Sudi.

The entire campign was a joke always the Brits claimed as in modern Iraq today 1000 of enemy soliders killed or wounded out of pure probaganda reason. The so called 21 years war was nothing more then 3 skirmishes where the Devrish fired and fled. 99% of the Devrishes wars were with Somali clans and Qaadiriya tariqa , raiding and looting.

The last battle was 1921 when 5000 Isaaq led by Xaji Waraabe raided Qoraxay and killed most of the Dervish wounding the Mullah under his armbit , he survived and moved to Iimiy with few of his closest relative where he married a 13 year old who still survives till now in Hiiraan, few months later he died of his wounds. She was interviwed in 2002.

About the British claiming airplanes brought the end of the devrish was a mere commrcial for the production of airplanes and a publicity for then he minister of war Churchil.

Now days few somalis can talk about the movement Somalis confused the movement with the man thanks to the last somali goverment who exalted the Mullah as a prophet of somali nationalism despite the fact he always said he was never a "somali" a term he used dispargintly and thanks to a sub-clan called Dhulos who worship the man before God and some where before Mohamed, the theifing Mullah still survives on myth.

Xplaya,

I wish I could find the article. I found it in the history section on one of the clan sites. It looked like the author knew what he was talking about. I did find this, although I can't read the whole thing:

http://www.jstor.org/pss/179976

"61 British sources contend that the death of the Mullah occurred on 23 November I920; ..."

copywrite by Robert Hess, 1964.

Otherwise, I think we are in agreement.
