thats wrong ciise. :( its not their fault they cant speak the damn thing. its their up-bringing. their parents dont really teach them the language. its communication problem between these youths and their parents.

you can't be serious, can you?

do you consider AY to be a somali (i.e. the concept of it)?

btw, i can speak poor somali and a lot of other languages. most of them poorly, too.

Just because you were raised around Somali people and thus learned the language do not judge us mayn. Its not a choice we made to not speak the language. It just happened that we are clueless about it. atleast am trying but than its not easy either when regular somali folkz be calling you names and saying shit when u try to speak the language and it dont sound good.

There is no excuse for not knowing somali, I have met old (30+) fish and chip people who were born in the UK and speak perfect Somali... their fathers were seaman and they lived in East London all their lives.. so if they can speak Somali (albeit with weird accent  ) then there is no excuse!!

Cisse Westlake,

I don't think you're putting the situation some of the Somali youth are facing into perspective walaal. They're growing up in a different country with a different lifestyle and a different language. Some of them haven't been back to Somalia, they don't know much about Somali culture and they also struggle with the language. The only time they probably speak the Somali language is at home with their parents, and that's probably just enough to communicate with their parents and other relatives. You have to understand that they spend most of their time at school with their friends, and they converse in English with their friends and teachers. So you can see that they spend most of their day speaking English rather than their native tongue. This means that they'll obviously find speaking English easier and more accessible, whereas, their native tongue is more difficult therefore it takes a back seat. But I understand that your intentions are good walaal, and that every Somali should at least speak & understand some Af-Somali. However, the situation is more complex than you're making out walaal. The parents obviously have a duty to teach their children their mother tongue, but once, they step out of the house, they'll undoubtedly speak in English or the language of the country they reside in.

Also, I've observed that before the child starts school, he/she speaks very good Somali, since they spend most of their time with the mother. But as soon as that child starts school and he/she learns English, slowly, the Somali language goes out of the window. Which is quite sad, but that's the reality of the situation.

I think the parents need to probably set the rule that only Af-Somali should be spoken at home, and nothing else, even to their other siblings.

I couldn't speak Af-Somali properly until I was 16 myself, I've learnt how to read, write and speak Af-Somali by myself. So walaal, just give them time, and have more faith in them, Insha-Allah. And instead of shunning them, don't you think, we should encourage and support them?
