Nice topic bro,

Ramadan is a very special time in my family, aslike most muslims in the world.

This ramadan will be especially hard as it is the longest fasting time for a while. The sun will go down at around 8, which will be tough. But inshallah Kheyr.

I first started fasting in grade 5 on the weekends and have completed all 30days since grade 6, age 10 or so. Laakin last yr i felt sick on one day and was puking and had no choice but to break my fast. Made it up already laakin.

As for memories, i remember the time all the somalis in my area would prepare food for the masjid and everyone would break their fast toghther, good times. Also at one point i had many uncles and fam staying with us, my mum use to make in excess of 120 sambusa everyday. lol

In terms of rountine this yr will be hard as working in an office, i'm always talking, meeting etc and the people i work with are pigs always eating. But inshallah i have booked the last 2 weeks of ramadan off as part of my annual leave, then inshallah i will spend more time at the masjid. No gym or football the whole of ramadan, small sacrifice.

ramadan is always important to me. i'm not sure if it is as important to everyone. it is not just a holy month for me... it is an experience of its own. i have been fasting since i was 7, i think. i remember the first ramadan i fasted a complete day... i wasn't supposed to. and i lied to my mother (which is a big no no in ramadan)... about how i ate at my aunt's house... so that i wouldn't be forced to have lunch. at the end of the day, i really thought, "wow this is not a big deal!" and i was hooked since.

my memories of ramadan often entail not the fasting itself but the experience of iftaar/afur. i loved songs like... "marxab, marxab yaa ramadan" (by waaberi), "soonka wanaagsan" (hibo nuura), "rabi salli" (by magool), and really liked "afuraay, afuraay" (waaberi). i loved the way the sambuus smelled, the bajiye made my eyes tear a bit, how the kus-kus and ismaris were everywhere. i enjoyed the tasting of timir ... right before praying, with a few sips of water.

aah... i REALLY liked the way somali people changed (overnight) during ramadan. i used to wish it was ramadan ALL the time because it was always peaceful. and in school the teachers would not ask us to put our heads on the table, beating us. mom was more forgiving, and dad rarely was mad.

so, i leave you with ramadan kariim mubaarak... and magool:

"aduunyada rafaad iyo
waa reeryo guuroo
ifka laga raraayoo...
qofna kuma haraayee....
kuwaa rarranka naarta iyo
lagaa reebay jahannabo
ayaa rays degaayee....

intaa raacday nebigee
rafiiqiisii noqotee
oo rumeeysa noqonee
ku salliya rasuulka!
rabbi salli ... calal xabiibi muxammaad
wa calal aali, manhumal kuramaa'u..."

Started to fast when I was 8, though I didn't start to do it full month till I entered high school

When I was 8, Ramadan was like in the beginning of the year and I thought fasting till 4 PM was tough  with hooyo cooking tuna sambuusa, canjeero, barris, suuqar

okay let me stop :)

Ramadan Kariim InshaAllah everyone.

MashaAllah to the topic, its something me need to focus on.

The companions of the Prophet (saw) would prepare 6 months in advance for Ramadan. Pray to Allah to make it the best, to help them through it and make it the best one. Then after Ramadan they would thank Allah the same amount and ask Allah to accept it.

This is something we need to adopt. I mean, Ramadan is the most important month for a Muslim!
Look how the Kufar prepares for Christmas well in advance, or some Muslims will even prepare for their B-day well in advance, yet majority of the people forget Ramadan? When we go on holiday we prepare months and months in advance, we get the ticket early.. Think of Ramadan, this is the most Blessed Month!!
Its the only month out of the whole year which Allah has chose to bless, where the gates of hell are shut, the shaydaan is locked up, all the gates of Paradise are wide open and Allah is bestowing his grace, opening up his hands to everyone all day! Your sins are forgiven and your good deeds mean more.

We need to prepare spiritually, physically and intellectually. Read more and more Quran, try to limit idol talk and actions, engage in goodness - even small things, try to finish the Quran in shorter periods, memorize more, particularly longer Surahs for the nights and try to do the night prayers! This is a lot, its not a small matter and allot of preparation needs to go in, in order to train yourself for the actual month. InshaAllah pray to Allah to make your intensions pure and reward you.

& Children love it! - Its just more of a challenge getting the grown adults to take part, wholeheartedly!
It saddens me when Muslims dont take advantage of this month, its just a small sacrifice!! I'm sure you can cut the things which will not get you anywhere anyhow.. smoke, the qaad, zina, all sinning !!
Everyone needs to educate themselves about Ramadan before it comes and goes.. Its not just about fasting and praying. InshaAllah get a decent book and read about it, better yet there are many lectures happening I suggest you attend them for the sake of Allah. Also plenty of audio online.

No excuses, we will be asked about it.

Asalamu alikum to all, and an early Ramadan Kariim from me :)

I really don't remember my first Ramadan, I think I started quite late :( however I did start before I was 15!

My family are big enough to make it a gathering, mashallah. Ramadan is always special in my family, because there has never been a time where we all got together in the same place at the same time to EAT

Nope the routine doesn't change that much....I, my sisters and my mom always seem to be in the kitchen cooking....I'm always forced to cook the Malawax :x

My best Ramadan memory - When I insisted that we eat in the Living Room with my brothers, and stop behaving like second class citizens by eating in the kitchen......Revloutions are sweet!!!
