Al-Hamawi, desscribing the Banaadir coast as made up of a chain of Muslim city states, wrote about the pagan customs of northern Somali groups, only lightly touched by Islam. he mentioned
for instance the "cada" customs of bridegrooms cutting off male sexual organs of fellow villagers
and displaying them as a sign of virility to portective brides (which is totaly against Islamic values and teachings) was practiced there.

Yaqut al-Hamawi

Yaqut ibn-Abdullah al-Rumi al-Hamawi) (1179-1229) was a Syrian biographer and geographer. "al-Rumi" ("from Rum") refers to his Greek (Byzantine) descent, "al-Hamawi" means that he is from Hama, Syria, and ibn-Abdullah means his father's name was Abdullah. The word yaqut means ruby. He was known for his encyclopedia writings of the Muslim world.

Yaqut was sold as a slave to someone who later moved to Baghdad. Upon recognizing his abilities, Yaqut's purchaser provided him with a good education. He was later freed and traveled a great deal. Yaqut also earned a living copying and selling manuscripts.

I believe that until the 11th century, most Somali were pagans, the conversion began from Mogadishu in the 8th century, was sped up in the 10th century under Darood and finished around the arrival of Isaaq in the 12th.
