The stuff I saw was covered with VERY colorful pictures of animals and birds. Bright blues, reds and greens. I was told it was printed in Europe, I think Italy.

Coolposion,

Italian was the official government language until the 1970s since Somali did not have a script since 1972 or 1974.

The "N" Somali (New Somali Shilling) was ordered by Siyaad in 1989 to replace the Somali shilling.

Sheekh,

Ali Mahdi's government took the order from the European firm that printed it. It was used in North Muqdisho from 1991-1994.

The first currency minted in Somalia was minted by the Sultanate of Mogadishu in the 13th century and stopped in the 16th century when trade opportunities ended due to Portuguese predations. In the north the Ottoman Akce probably started being used by the 1520s, or some local variant of the silver pieces.
When Oman took over the east coast in the 1740s and kicked out the Portuguese, the Maria Theresa thaler bizarrely enough became the currency of East Africa from Abyssinia to Mogadishu.
In the north the Egyptian Pound replaced the Akce when Egypt became independent (Which Somalia and Sudan were part of), and later the Indian Rupee was used when Egyptian Somaliland became British Somaliland (which was part of British India) in the late 19th century.
