A farmer near the southern Somali village of Geedbuureed, 25 kilometres south of the town of Huddur, shows the few stunted sorghum plants barely surviving in his field.
Farmers said that because the April-June rains started late and ended early, their crops had failed.
Seventy percent of annual cereal production comes from harvests following the main gu rains between April and July. The deyr rainy season between October and December, produces a smaller harvest. ''

^So how come every time there is a small drought thousands of southern Somalis starve while these guys have the Jubba and Shabelle full of water throughout the year? I doubt most Somali farmers use irrigation systems and just depend on rainfall.

Those are the ones in lower Jubboyinka. In the upper Jubboyina and Middle Shabelle, there are extensive networks of irrigation canals. Large numbers of them were built by NGO during the 1990s to avert a possible drought in the future. But you are right in a sense, we need to upgrade those canals and distribute them throughout;
