Because of the policy of withdrawing from the hinterland, the British undid the damage of excommunicating Sheikh Maxamed Salah and the damage that Sayid Maxamed had sustained from the Tree-of-Bad-Counsel. Towards the end of 1912 at least one third of the pastoral Somalis perished in the chaos.
