Somali Foods Explained!!

Post by IRONm@N »

Somali foods explained in detail

--Fast-foods aka Fried foods and sweets (sambuusa, bajiye, xalwo, buskut, malawax and buur)

Image

these fried foods taste good and are usually eaten on holidays, wedding and during Ramadan. but these foods are high on fats and colestrol and they are unhealthy if you eat too much.

--Baked foods (canjeero iyo muufo)

These foods are very healthy and are usually eaten in the morning and at night. they are mom's favorite foods. there is no Somali family that don't start with Canjeero. its low in fat.

--Gourmet foods (like pasto and bariis)

These foods are usually found in Restuarants and taste great, they are eaten after friday prayers, on dates or to go when you are Iskabulo working. Pasto is some of the Italian influences it left on Somalia.

--Traditional Somali foods

Digir iyo bariis or Cambuulo eaten around Mogadishu and soroundings, usually added some sugar and saliid macsaro

--Soor or Galeey eaten in rural areas and farmers! its just crushed maze and milk. kids usually hated, but its full of energy and will keep you full for 8hrs.

--Banana --Is the only fruit Somali ppl eat everyday, with every type of food. its the most consumed fruit and exported of Somalia. Somalis don't traditionally eat fruits or vegetables, but ppl who grow up around Jubba and Shabeele in South are more likely to eat fruits and vegetables then any other Somalis.

--Meat: Somalis eat goat and camel meat mostly, some eat chicken and fish isn't eaten that much, even though we have the longest beach in Africa. Meat is highly eaten in Northern Somalia, specially goat meat.

I don't know about you, but where I come from, we have canjeero and laxoox; two different food. And no; Xabashi and Somali food isn't same. There's too much bisbaas in Xabashi food, plus it gives you laabjeex. Somalis eat a variety of food such as bariis & muus, spaghetti, macaroni, soor, hilib kalaankal & bisteeki, oodkac, beer (liver), kaluun, etc. Xabashi food is basically injera & doro wat.
