BOSSASO, Somalia Sep 17 (Garowe Online) - Seven suspects were detained in Somalia's northeastern region of Puntland on Wednesday after police chief Gen. Gani Mohamed Abdi was severely wounded in an overnight Tuesday shooting.
Hassan Dahir Afqura, the vice president of Puntland, told Radio Garowe that the seven suspects were arrested in an area 160km from Bossaso, the region's commercial port.
"They [suspects] were driving Gen. Gani's vehicle," the Vice President said, adding that seven assault rifles and US$7,000 cash was found inside the car.
He indicated that the attackers were funded "from outside," while suggesting that the assassination attempt on Gen. Gani was intended to damage the relative security in Puntland.
Meanwhile, Gen. Gani was transported to Djibouti today after sustaining a gunshot in the head and another shot in the upper torso, according to hospital sources.
