salafi's were the first three generations of the sahaba after the death of the prophet. U couldn't be a salafi if u wanted to.

Salafi is not a group or a political party, you can be a member of, there isn't anyone to give allegiance to except the Prophet (saw).

Salaf means the Sahaba (ra) and Salafi means the one who ascribe them salves to the companions, the first generation of Islam. The ones who the Prophet taught the purity of Islam before innovations began in later generation.

Salaf, the first three generations were the best of this ummah

Allah's Messenger (may Peace Be Upon Him) said: "The best of my Ummah is my generation, then those who follow them, then those who follow them." (Narrated by Muslim)
