Fundraising Ideas
I need to raise some $$$ for a charitable event with the help of friends to help out the Qaxooti in Afgoye:
Got any ideas ?
So far, I am thinking:
1. Somali Party & donating proceeds but the risk is that some people view this as a qabiil event even though its to help destitute people.
2. Somali Dinner and Dance - The main audience would be mainly NonSomalis and a couple of good people.
3. Hitting up the Masjid & asking the Imam for help

Re: Fundraising Ideas
geographically you should never mention where the money is going b/c there are sick people out there that will link it to a certain clan. you should just mention the cause in general, they won't ask too many questions.

Good way of ripping off poor Somalis and keeping them in the dark for the small prints!The-Screw wrote:geographically you should never mention where the money is going b/c there are sick people out there that will link it to a certain clan. you should just mention the cause in general, they won't ask too many questions.
Any other experience you like to share?

Re: Fundraising Ideas
There is no way a Somali person would refuse to pay a contibution for another Somalis in distress.
But the problem arises when the person who is hosting the event is "Qabiiliiste" himself..
No one will go to that kind of a pesron.
But A?W if you used to go to all Somali events regardless of their qabiil people will come to you...
I contribute to every Somali event in which I was asked to donate..and believe me when I invite people over to donate on a cause they all show up
Just remember, you will always reap what you plant...

Re: Fundraising Ideas
Go with number 1 & 2 and forget the third one about the masjid.
How about trying to get Somalis to sponsor a marathon that you have run, or a long distance swiming. Or those are white people way of raising money?
anyway, all the best.

This is how is done in London, crystal clear and very informative, which makes the donors at ease to even pay more. My experience; is The more honest you are the more rewarding it becomes, since at the end of the day, your there to please Allah for helping his servants and in return for ajar. So honesty is the key to success

Why you complicating the issue? The man is trying to raise money for needy people...yet, here you are talking about honesty and unnecessary palava.

Re: Fundraising Ideas
I like the dinner and dance for mostly non-Somalis.
I would try to get donations of Somali goods like a bebis, dhil or incense burner; macawiis, diric, etc. for an auction.
Video of the camp in Afgoi would be killer.
Send me a PM with an address. You can count on a donation from me.

Re: Fundraising Ideas
Grant,
Thanks for your insight. I am thinking of doing an event right during the Christmas season when folks are in a generous mood.
