MOGADISHU, Somalia Jan 20 (Garowe Online) - At least 9 people were killed Tuesday in Somalia's capital Mogadishu after insurgents attacked government forces and their allies, Radio Garowe reports.

The fighting raged across three districts in Mogadishu, setting off battles and bombs in Kaaraan, Dharkinley and Wadajir districts.

"The fighting took place in areas under the control of [Somali] police chief [Gen. Abdi] Qeybdiid," said a witness, adding that residents had started fleeing.

Six people – including an Islamic school teacher – were killed as the fighting spread across streets in Dharkinley and Wadajir districts, with both sides using heavy machineguns and rocket launchers.

Wadajir District Commissioner Ahmed Hassan "Daai" confirmed the attacks, saying that "four factions of Islamists" had attacked the police checkpoints for two days in a row.

Unidentified spokespersons associated with Jabhatul Islamiya (Islamic Court) claimed responsibility for the attacks, vowing to continue the attacks until they remove "illegal roadblocks" from Mogadishu.

Separately, at least three people were killed in Kaaraan district and several others wounded when insurgents attacked Sana'a intersection manned by government police, witnesses said.

Al Shabaab fighters claimed responsibility for an attack on a checkpoint along the Mogadishu-to-Afgoye road. Local reports said the checkpoint was under the control of government-allied militias.

Islamist hardliners have vowed to continue guerrilla attacks in Mogadishu, despite the withdrawal of Ethiopian forces last week.

Moderates within the Islamic Courts movement, which splintered into various factions, have called for a ceasefire and continue efforts to establish a 'unity government' in Somalia.
