Mixed in with Queen Elizabeth’s blue blood is the blood of Prophet Muhammad (s), according to Burke’s Peerage, the genealogical guide to royalty. The relation came out when Harold B. Brooks-Baker, publishing director of Burke’s, wrote Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher to ask for better security for the royal family.
“The royal family’s direct descent from the prophet Mohammed cannot be relied upon to protect the royal family forever from Moslem terrorists,” he said. Probably realizing the connection would be a surprise to many, he added, ”It is little known by the British people that the blood of Mohammed flows in the veins of the queen. However, all Moslem religious leaders are proud of this fact.”
Brooks-Baker said the British royal family is descended from Prophet (s) through the Arab kings of Seville, who once ruled Spain. By marriage, their blood passed to the European kings of Portugal and Castille, and through them to England’s 15th century King Edward IV.

I was surprised that the writers of comments over at Salon.com did not know the below. It is common knowledge to anyone interested in genealogy.

For some reason this galls some people in the West who are bigots. I reprint Cole's remarks in order to irritate them, and to get the rest of us to appreciate how connected we are.

hyper that was my view though my knowledge of islam leaders in iberia is limited. i thought they were claiming through the offsprings of hussein r.a (son of kalif ali ra.) who became ruler of portugal.

I have a problem with is this 'Ahlul Bait rule England' nonsense. The 'Ahlul Bait' are characterised by two things; descent from the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and an unwavering commitment to the faith. This obviously disqualifies Queen Elizabeth.

As for the good Queen being a descendent, its entirely possible. You never know when it comes to that political mess that was al-Andalus after the fall of the Cordoba Caliphate. I find this post on Ancestry.com, but I'm not sure how authoritative this can be.

Medieval genealogists have spilt a lot of ink trying to find a descent from the Prophet Muhammand to the royal families of Europe. The short answer is: there isn't one. The long answer is: there probably IS one, but all attempts to find and prove a line of descent have failed so far.

For a long time it was thought that Zaida, the concubine of King Alfonso VI of Castile, was a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad. We know now that Zaida was the wife of Fath al-Mamun, the son of al-Mutamid, the emir of Seville. Her husband died in 1191, and as a gesture of goodwill, she was sent to the court of Alfonso VI of Castile. Alfonso was at that time battling against the incursions of the Almoravids (Berbers from Africa) who were threatening the Islamic dynasties of Spain, so she was meant to seal an alliance between the emir and the king. Because Islam specifically forbids marrying Muslim women to outsiders, the emir would NEVER have sent his own daughter to become a concubine to a Christian ruler. This would have been a terrible affront to his dignity. But a childless daughter-in-law? More likely.

Anyway, Zaida was baptised with the name Isabel, and she gave birth to a son named Sancho in 1093. Because Sancho was Alfonso's only son, legitimate or otherwise, he passed a decree naming Sancho as his heir. However, Sancho died at the Battle of Uccles in 1108, so the point became moot. Now, the story becomes more complicated. Alfonso had married a woman named Elizabeth in 1100 -- was she identical to Zaida/Isabel, Isabel being the Spanish version of Elizabeth? Perhaps. Strangely enough, Queen Elizabeth's funerary inscription describes her as being the daughter of King Louis VI of France, but this doesn't make sense for chronological reasons (he was born in 1081, there's no way he had a marriageable daughter in 1100!), and anyway, no contemporary source mentions such a prestigious marriage, which would be expected if the king of Castile were to marry a princess of France.

Whatever the truth, Queen Elizabeth was the mother of Alfonso's daughters Sancha and Elvira. Elvira married King Roger II of Sicily and Sancha married Rodrigo de Lara. Check out Bernard Reilly's "The Kingdom of Leon-Castilla under King Alfonso VI" (1988) for the sources of the above.

Although QEII probably has the best researched ancestry on the planet, there's still a lot of holes and unknown ancestors, so while it's entirely POSSIBLE, even LIKELY, for her to be descended from the Prophet Muhammad, a link has never been PROVEN.
