The difficulty comes in identifying the right leader or group. The U.S. could discretely fund mainstream Salafi figures like Madkhali who are effective in siphoning off support from jihadis and who do not advocate violence (e.g. by paying for publications, lectures, new schools). This will be effective in the short term, but it further strengthens the dehumanizing Salafi ideology from which the jihadi movement derives much of its inspiration. The U.S. could also fund non-Salafis, but it currently lacks the expertise necessary to determine who is truly influential. Perhaps a better strategy in the near term would be to pressure Middle Eastern governments to allow greater political participation and visibility for groups that jihadis are threatened by. This approach should vary from country to country. For example, in Egypt, it would be the Muslim Brotherhood; in Saudi Arabia, the Shi’a. Again, it is essential that the U.S. hand not be seen.

kolombo, no, sadly i don't have you confused with anyone.

sure, on the surface you might not be one, and you might even hate their beloved apostate rulers (house of saud and other arab regimes) and scholars (e.g. the infallible shaykh rabee), and you'd even be considered a hater of this sect. but taking a closer look and one does indeed see that you're basically of the same persuasions as this cult:

-you associate partners with allah (e.g. obama, sharif);
-you don't fully accept the sovereignty of allah;
-your ideology seems to restrict tawheed to just the personal realm while excluding it from the social realm;
-in your ideology shariah can co-exist and work within a kufr system (e.g. sharif's tfg;
-you believe in man-made concepts (i.e. democracy);
-you oppose the mujahideen of shabab - and like minded others - who're striving for the cause of allah in somalia;
-you went out your way to attack muslims who're fighting kuffar;
-you blindly follow your preferred high shaykhs and so on.

now, this shared ideology between them and you could be because of your ignorance? who knows? only allah knows.
