Yup, we have it in our family. My aunt (mom's younger sister alle hau naxariisto) died of it in 1989 and several members of my family have been diagnosed with tumors (that didn't turn into cancer yet).

All the deaths in my family have been of cardiovascular diseases. (Blood pressure etc)
Never heard of a cancer patient in my (greater) family.
I also never seen an albino Somali, does that even exist?

Allah ya raxma i heard of a lady that died of cancer today... ilaahey ha uu naxariisto amiin.
I always hear people around me refering to it as 'xanuunkii dee kii' or 'xanuunkii xuma' and they always add may god swt never bring it to us.
It is a taboo to talk about it within our community.. almost as if you are going to get it by talking about it

and i try and not question my culture so i guess it makes sense.

Xoog, you are right. For a long time the family didn't know what was wrong with my aunt and Somalia didn't have the equipment to diagnose my her. Her husband (and you know him, her husband was one of Aabe Siyaad's high staff members) had to get doctors in from Germany and they are the ones who diagnosed it but by that time it was too late.
Ciise, thanks man.

Its a combination of many reasons..as to why you dont hear about it..
First, it takes years for genes to mutate , thanks in part to enviromental reasons and dietary habbits , to the point that a normal cell changes into a cancerous one..
Secondly, there are some cancers that dont afflict certain ppl and thats a geograhical issue , which no one knows why..
And more importantly, the somali community in the diaspora havent been studied enough to reach conclusions..but Cancer aflicts all human kind.

Ilaahey ha uu naxariisto my aunty died from it.. i remember walahi it was so on the downlow when she first got diagnosed,I guess we acknowledge that it is all amar allah swt.. whereas gaalo people go on about it how they got 10days to live and how they intend to do most of the things they always have wanted to do in life... have u seen that Jade Goody from BB couple of yrs ago? suddenly the woman is all over the media with a bald head and tearfull eyes.... exactly what does she want sympathy?
Our people are made out of brick walle... and they have arkanatul imaam, most of all they avoid sympathy
But you know im gonna be so somali about this now... ilaahey noma keeno amiin so... anigu wa kaga baxay hadalka sxb.
