My encounter with mother Ho Ho

Balaayo waa laga war doonaa.

I agreed with Julie (that is her name, the American version of Chuin Lee) to meet mother Ho Ho (Dad is still in China) and witness first hand what is in store for me.

I went there around 8:00 pm, rang the bell and Julie opened the door, she was dressed in a typical red Chinese attire which I have never seen her wear b4. She bowed, moved backwards and asked me to come in. My shoes were covered with snow, so I politely took them off and proceeded with my socks. I sat on a cozy sofa and exchanged pleasantries with her. Mamma Ho Ho was busy in the kitchen, preparing dinner for her potential son-in-law, she called from the kitchen, apparently asking "who is it?" Julie answered "It's Sir-Lugta mamma" Mother Ho Ho continued babbling in Chinese and coming into the living room. I got off the sofa, extended my hand for a handshake, she lamely took it, looking at her daughter and raising what is left of her fading eyebrows, I am sure she said "He is black!!!" in Chinese in a surprised tone, to which the daughter sheepishly smiled and brushed the remark aside.

I sat down but was immediately motioned to get up and follow them into the dining room, mother Ho Ho took her seat and asked me to sit down facing her. She served me with veggie soup (something that looked like seaweed), salad, followed by a bowl of coconut rice, chicken wrapped in foliage with a peanut paste dip, it was delicious. Mother Ho Ho was very small even for a Chinese but exuberant and very energetic, she has a habit of looking surprised all the time and it takes a lot of effort for her to open her eyes wide.

Long story short, she finally asked the big question "What do u want with my daughter?"

I had no immediate answer, so it took me what felt like ages, I finally blurted out "As you know we are dating and if things work well between us, we may end up having children"

The word children lit her tiny face and agin that effort of opening her eyes wide, she said in her broken English "Good, now you no staleenja, you come evely time"

I thanked her for such delicious dinner and went back to the living room with Julie. Abruptly, mother Ho Ho glided into the room and barked, wagging her finger "No children b4 father comes from China" I was startled but simply said "Ok" she agreed with me "Ok, ok"
