what's the fuss? it's only 8%. in some countries unemployment rates are 20% or more. when the numbers in the US get that high perhaps there is a cause for alarm.

but why the shock? this is the way capitalist economies work. these recessions are chronic in capitalist economies unlike planed/socialist economies. there are no recessions/depressions in socialist economies. this is what Marx wrote about. according to Marx capitalist economies are prone to overproduction. this is because capitalists are driven by profits. when profits go up, there is overproduction because you can make good money. but too much of production leads to decline in prices. and the inevitable collapse follows suit. remember the hi-tech bubble? the same is happening right now and there will many more as long as the dark side of capitalism is not controlled.
