The Coal Business

Post by Demure »

Was it ever stopped? the ICU attempted to curtail the heavy production of coal but it was short lived.

When I went to Somalia in 2006, I flew into Baladawgle, driving from Baladawgle to Xamar, it was shocking to see the huge trucks loaded with coal on the roads, there were so many of them. I was told there was hundreds of trucks worth of coal produced per day. Out of which only a fraction stayed in Somali markets and the rest were shipped out.

I anticipate Banadir to become a major producer of goods in the future, but should the coal business be one of our productions?

For one it makes Banadir a producer -> exporter of goods -> Source of Income.

On the flip side, the industry even with regulation has the potential of turning South Somalia into a desert.

Are there any advantages at all to keep the coal business operating in Banadir?

The coal business should be but to an end immediately.

In these times of climate change and all that, we cannot afford to turn SOmalia's environment in a desert.

The coal production is not worth to destroy our environment, we can make 100 times more money on other ways.

Hey, what about the potential Uranium that is stored somewhere in Central Somalia? Is that of any use?

i think its main use is for nuclear power stations and the financially state somalia is in will probally not allow this for maybe another 2 decades, also if Iran is not allowed to build a nuclear power station i would think an African Muslim country has an even smaller chance, also alshabab will leave the US remembering somalia as terrorist infected.

basically Uranium is useless to us :P

Baasabuur,

Thx for the trivia.

Abakar,

Uranium can be used to generate energy. We are far from achieving that though. That's why we need to provide incentives to our youngsters to study more science oriented programs.

Somaliweyn,

We should borrow a leaf from Wangari Maathai and plant trees all over the place.
Hey, do we know who the major players in the coal business are? Is it one company, multiple companies?
